8,200 illegals deported up to July

KOTA KINABALU - Strong enforcement has led to a higher number of deportations of illegal immigrants this year.

The figure saw a 21.85 per cent hike for the first seven months of this year, compared with the same period last year.

Sabah Immigration director Noor Alam Khan Abdul Wahid Khan said that as of July 31, some 8,223 illegals have been deported to their country of origin, with the majority being Filipinos (6,304) and Indonesians (1,806).

He added that there was better cooperation from all parties, including related agencies and members of the public.

"The formation of the Eastern Sabah Security Command also has had a positive effect in creating awareness," he said at the state Immigration Department's Hari Raya open house at the federal administration complex here yesterday.

He said there were 2,628 immigrants at detention centres in Papar, Sibuga and Tawau awaiting their travel documents prior to being deported.

"The processing of detained illegals should not be more than three months, to avoid congestion in the centres.

"Weekly deportations via Sandakan and Tawau would see about 200 immigrants being sent home at any one time."
