Cop found bludgeoned to death, last seen chasing suspect

MALACCA - A 31-year-old police lance corporal was bludgeoned and killed with a rock by a teenage thief he was pursuing on foot at the Air Keroh Industrial Estate in Taman Teknologi Cheng, Malacca today.

Lance Corporal Zal Azri Abd Somad who died of serious head injuries was found in a drain by his colleagues during an ambush on a gang wanted for a series of crimes in the state at 9.30am.

Malacca police chief DCP Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said a hunt for the 17-year-old was issued immediately.

The teenager was captured at 12pm at Taman Sri Krubong by police detectives.

He said Zal was part of a six-man police team who had trailed the teenager and his three accomplices to an iron ore factory during the operation under Ops Cantas Khas.

He said the gang was ambushed by the raiding party minutes after they broke into the factory.

The teenager managed to bolt from the scene, whereas his accomplices were nabbed.

Chuah said Zal gave chase and is believed to have caught up with the teenager before being battered with a rock.

Several minutes after apprehending the other suspects, Zal's colleagues went looking for him to render their assistance, but found him lying motionless instead.

"We have been on this gang's trail for some time and they were caught in the act today. They were planning to use a lorry to move the stolen goods. Our initial investigations also show that the teenage suspect who was pursued by Zal was high on syabu. The four men will be remanded for investigations. Zal's death is a great loss to us," said Chuah who extended his condolences to Zal's family.

He said Zal was survived by his wife and two children.
