PENAMPANG - Deputy Chief Minister and founder of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan has been returned unopposed as party president after nominations closed Tuesday.
But grand battles will be seen for all the other party positions, especially the three deputy presidents posts, which normally see the incumbents being retained unopposed.
PBS election committee chairman, Datuk Johnny Mositun when announcing the list of candidates said Pairin received nominations from all the 57 PBS divisions showing the continuing confidence in him to continue leading the party.
In what is seen as a grand battle, all incumbent three deputy presidents were being challenged this time around, Mositun told reporters at the party headquarters in Donggongon here.
Mositun said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, who is the incumbent deputy president under the non-Muslim Bumiputera quota, was being challenged by secretary-general Datuk Henrynus Amin.
He said Ongkili, who won uncontested in the previous party election, received 32 nominations while Henrynus garnered nominations from 20 divisions.
For the Muslim Bumiputera quota, three people qualified to contest, namely incumbent deputy president Datuk Almudin Kaida with 17 nominations; Wanita chief Senator Datuk Jamilah Sulaiman with 26 nominations; and, Rakam Sijim with seven nominations.
The deputy president post under the Chinese quota will also see a contest with three people receiving sufficient nominations, namely incumbent Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai (33), Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah (17) and Datuk Thien Fui Yun (three).
Mositun said the Youth chief post would probably see a straight fight between incumbent Datuk Jahid Jahim with 45 nominations and Datuk Jikulin Nointin @ Jack (3).
As for the Wanita chief post, four people qualified to contest with incumbent Jamilah getting 16 nominations, Tandek assemblyman Anita Baranting (21), Datin Dr Lungkiam Dambul Dumaring (four) and Sabini Ansumor (eight), he said, adding all the qualified candidates for the party election would have one week to decide whether to accept the nomintions.
According to Mositun, the Youth and Wanita elections would be held on Oct 21, while the main elections would be on Oct 23.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was expected to open the PBS congress on Oct 22, at Hongkod Koisaan in KDCA.

Deletekalau jawatan presiden dipertandingkan rasanya tidaklah sengit sangat kerana majoriti masih memberikan sokongan penuh kepada pairin.. lainlah kalau jawatan timbalan presiden parti..
