After a four-years of struggle against his death sentence, the Singapore High Court has given a second chance to convicted drug trafficker Malaysian Yong Vui Kong, commuting his sentence to life imprisonment.
Yong's counsel M Ravi said that the judge Choo Han Teck was satisfied with Yong's cooperation with the authorities and that his role in drug trafficking was merely a runner.
Yong will therefore receive life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane, the human rights lawyer told the reporters outside the Supreme Court complex this morning.
According to Ravi, an appreciative Yong kneeled in front of the judge upon hearing the decision.
Activists have been lobbying for clemency for Yong, a Sabahan in his early twenties, over the past years seemingly with little success.
His change in fortunes may be linked to the Singapore parliament passing legal reforms last November abolishing mandatory death sentences in some drug trafficking and murder cases.
