Publicity stunt by Junz Wong backfired as girl admits fake robbery attempt

Too eager to be hero, Junz Wong has tragically turned a private family matter into a public embarrassment

KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has accused DAP Sabah assistant secretary cum Likas Assemblyman Junz Wong of allegedly manipulating the young girl in the 'fake robbery' controversy, to come out to apologise publicly.

Speaking at a news conference held here today, a group of SAPP women activists led by its supreme councillor Chia Miu Lee claimed that Wong had manipulated the girl to issue a public apology, to Suria Sabah Shopping Mall especially, after his dubious claim concerning the so-called robbery attempt which allegedly took place in Suria Sabah recently, backfired.

They were responding to the public apology made by the girl, who refused to be identified, in a news conference organized by Wong, on Wednesday.

They said it was utterly irresponsible for Wong to manipulate the girl to apologise to everyone especially Suria Sabah, after his attempt to score political mileage by highlighting the alleged robbery attempt in Suria Sabah, backfired. They noted that a thorough investigation by both Suria Sabah management and the police had confirmed that such incident never took place there.

They suspected that the said public apology was just a publicity stunt by Wong to cover up his blunder which has now backfired on him.

"In the first place, it was Junz Wong who personally posted on social media photos of a deeply cut thigh and hand with stitches without the consent or knowledge of the girl.

"He also described in detail in his "KK Shocking news" posting of a young girl being attacked by a robber who is suspected to be an illegal immigrant robber. He also wrote that it was lucky that the robber was scared off by a couple who came out from the toilet. He even called on Suria Sabah to step up their security," she said.

Chia continued that Wong’s desperation to score political mileage has caused the girl to unwittingly commit an offence of lodging a false police report which is a crime under the law.

"If Junz Wong had not recklessly posted the fake photos and story (of the attempted robbery at Suria Sabah), the wrist-cutting incident by the young girl would have remained strictly a private family matter, and she would not have had to go through the trauma of repeating her story in the police station, and subsequently a public apology," she said.

She maintained that that Wong had 'persuaded' the girl to lodge a false police report so as to cover up his own mistake earlier.

"Too eager to be a hero, Junz Wong had tragically turned a private family matter into a public embarrassment for the family," she lambasted.

Also present at the occasion were, Mary Siah, Wenddy Gaimin, and Rafidah Sarigan.

Cops want to meet woman who lied; YB gets a roasting

KOTA KINABALU - Police want to meet up with the woman who has now retracted her claims that she was robbed and slashed by an illegal immigrant at the Suria Sabah shopping mall here on Jan. 6.

City Police Chief ACP Jauteh Dikun on Thursday said they will record a statement from her before deciding on the next course of action.

Making false claims in a police report is an offence under Section 192 of the Penal Code which provides for a penalty of up to three years' jail and also a fine.

The woman, in her 20s, had a day earlier confessed that she actually made up the whole thing, adding that she had no intention of having the incident published in the newspapers.

She made the confession during a media conference at Suria Sabah attended by the mall's management and Democratic Action Party (DAP) committee led by its Likas Assemblyman Junz Wong.

She claimed that her friend, who is involved in the opposition DAP Youth, had uploaded the photos of her wounded on Facebook without her knowledge.

The mall's management in response stated that the closed circuit camera television at their mall had failed to show any footage of a bleeding woman exiting the mall during the alleged incident.

The woman lodged a police report on the alleged robbery-cum-assault on Jan 7 after being persuaded to do so by Wong.

Meanwhile, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) ridiculed Junz for turning a private family matter into a public embarrassment in his quest to be a hero.

Its Supreme Council member Chia Miu Lee said Wong craftily tried to rewrite the events of the last two weeks to cover up his blunder in the fake "Suria girl attack".

"When his attempt to take credit backfired, he irresponsibly blamed the girl for the blunder," said Chia, whose views were shared by social activist Mary Siah, SAPP Mudanita Wenddy Gaimin and Rafidah Sarigan.

"It is obscenely irresponsible for the DAP Assistant Secretary to manipulate the girl to feel guilty by having to 'apologise to everyone especially Suria Sabah' when it is Wong who is the guilty one.

"First, it was Wong who posted on social media photos of a deeply cut thigh and hand with stitches without the consent or knowledge of the girl.

"He had described in detail in his 'KK Shocking news' of a young girl being attacked by an illegal immigrant who was scared off by a couple who came out of a toilet.

"He had called on Suria to 'rise up their security level', adding that the girl refused to named. When in fact the girl had said nothing, except maybe to her family only.

"After Suria had conducted its investigation and issued a denial, Wong tried to cover up his own lie with another lie - this time by seeking out the girl (who he knew refused to be named) and physically escorting her to make a police report "after much persuasion from Wong".

"Wong made this scared girl unwittingly commit an offence of lodging a false report which is a crime. Wong and an assistant then posed for a nice photo with thumbs up announcing that 'it did really happen at Suria Sabah basement yesterday'.

"If he had not recklessly posted the fake photos and story (of the attack at Suria), then none of this matter would have gone public and if he had not made the girl go through the trauma of repeating her story in a police station, then a normal family would have been spared the anguish.

"The reason Wong made the girl lodge a report was to cover up his own mistake and earlier lies in the social media," she said.
