The Filipina resort worker abducted in April from Sabah in Malaysia is now at the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, two days after gaining her freedom on Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Sunday.
According to a “Balitanghali” report, the DFA said Malaysian authorities have turned Marcelita Dayawan over to Philippine Embassy officials.
Dayawan and Chinese Gao Hua Yuan were "rescued" Friday morning from Jolo after being held for 58 days by men believed to be members of the bandit Abu Sayyaf group.
They were then brought from Jolo to Sandakan and then to Kota Kinabalu where they were debriefed. Both were taken to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Last April 2, armed men seized the two from the Singamata Adventures and Reef Resort.
According to a report on Malaysia’s The Star Online, the 40-year-old Dayawan was "constantly threatened" with beheading if Gao’s family did not pay ransom for both of them "within 20 days."
But both the Malaysian and Philippine governments have maintained no ransom was paid for the release of the victims. — Xianne Arcangel /LBG, GMA News
