May 13 a distraction from country's real problems

For years, the Barisan Nasional government has been raising the spectre of racial and religious strife a la May 13, 1969.

Recently, even Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that another May 13 is possible; claiming the non-Muslims are challenging the role of Islam in the country.

But, is this the real problem plaguing Malaysia? Definitely not. In fact, all these controversial statements are merely an attempt to distract our attention from the real problems.

The soup kitchen incident and a sad case of a child breaking fast with mere porridge and banana fritters reflect the true problems affecting us. This indicates the widening gap between the haves and the have nots.

Endemic corruption and failed policies, in the last three decades have undone whatever results we have achieved in reducing income gap and eradicating poverty through the New Economic Policy.

Although the working class people are being hard pressed to make a living, the federal government refused to address the problem and continues to bleed the country of its coffers through crony capitalism.

To make matters worse, the government uses racial and religious issues to distract the masses from the socio-economic problems.

So now, we have a bigger problem. A polarised nation with chronic socio economic problems which is taking Malaysia into the league of failed nations in the world.

I urge all Malaysians including opposition leaders to not get distracted by these provocative statements by Umno and its agents of mischief such as Perkasa and Isma and rise against corruption to save Malaysia.
