Curfew extended to Oct 5

KOTA KINABALU - The police have extended to Oct 5 the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in the waters off eastern Sabah to thwart criminals from infiltrating the state or kidnapping people.

Sabah Police commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said today the 7 pm to 5 am curfew had entered the fifth phase since it was imposed on July 19 off the districts of Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna and Tawau.

The extension was prompted by Philippine intelligence indicating that criminals were prowling along the Malaysian-Philippine border at sea waiting for the opportunity to enter Sabah, he told a press conference here.

Jalaluddin reminded fishermen to observe the curfew lest their boats get confiscated and they end up facing prosecution.

He said that during the four phases of the curfew, the security forces arrested and prosecuted 92 people of various nationalities for violating the curfew and seized 24 fishing boats and two pump boats.

Jalaluddin also said that marine police constable Zakia Aleip was safe and had contacted his family 68 times since his abduction by a group of heavily armed men in an ambush on Pulau Mabul, Semporna, on July 12.

The latest call was made at 2.14 pm yesterday, he said, adding that the police were still in discussion with his kidnappers on the ransom demanded for his release. It is learnt that the abductors had demanded RM10 million.

Jalaluddin said cage-fish entrepreneur Chan Sai Chiun, who was abducted from Kampung Sapang Air, Kunak, on June 16, was also safe and the police were negotiating for his release as well.

He also said that the police had identified three individuals who allegedly disseminated messages of a defamatory and seditious nature on social media, particularly in relation to the attempt to secede Sabah from Malaysia.

The police would arrest them, he said, adding that the suspects were Malaysians and they were in the country, but not in Sabah. — BERNAMA
