SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today called on the country’s leaders to reject all forms of racial extremism to preserve peace and unity in Malaysia.
Najib, in a speech when officiating Gerakan’s 43rd National Delegates Conference (NDC) here today, said he regretted the actions of certain individuals who advocated extremism to gain political mileage.
He said political and community leaders should instead practise moderation and steer clear of racial or religious radicalism.
“It is easy for us to be the champions, to be a hero, to be someone who shouts something to gain popularity among a small band of followers. It is easy to be an extremist.
“But to be a real leader, (you need) to be accepted by all ethnic communities and faiths. That is the mark of a true leader,” he said, drawing rapturous applause from some 1,000 Gerakan delegates at Setia City Convention Centre here.
Najib said he was also concerned with the fact that many Malaysians were taking to the Internet to spread racial extremism and incite hatred among the various ethnic communities.
“On the Internet, people freely express their hate and anger (towards others) because there is censorship. Everything is open and they do things that are not right. They are not thinking right,” he said.
Najib said politicians must, therefore, set a good example to help eradicate racial polarisation in Malaysia.
“We as political leaders must show the way and reject all forms of extremism in the country. Barisan Nasional (BN) rejects all forms of extremism, and Umno rejects extremism.”
He said the ruling government would continue implementing balanced and moderate policies to help the country prosper.
“We will continue developing the country based on the goals set by our forefathers. We will stay true to their vision for Malaysia. And I ask you to be with me.”
