KOTA KINABALU - The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) gunboat CB204 that was reported missing since yesterday has been found, RMN chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar confirmed on Twitter this evening, adding that all seven crew members aboard are safe and sound.

He said search and rescue operators established connection with CB204 some 30 nautical miles southeast from Station Uniform, which is north of Pulau Layang Layang, off Sabah’s coastline.

Earlier, Abdul Aziz tweeted that search and rescue operators picked up a distress signal from the vessel.

According to his post on the microblogging site at about 5.30pm, the boat was having engine and steering gear problems.

He said that the KD Ganas and KD Lekiu navy ships were sent to the position to search for the missing combat boat, which is seven nautical miles from KD Ganas.

It is believed that the rescued vessel will be brought to the nearest base, Station Lima or Layang Layang.

The vessel departed the Kota Kinabalu navy base at about 5.00am with another naval ship, KD Paus yesterday morning at 5am. The gunboat’s last known position was 20 nautical miles northeast of Mengalum Island around 1.05pm Sunday.

The vessel was commanded by Lieutenant Azri Bakar with seven crew members onboard.
