Crowd at Gaya Street market despite warnings on social media

KOTA KINABALU - The popular Gaya Street Sunday market was its usual hive of activity despite social media calls for people to be cautious and stay away.

A crowd made up of families and tourists was seen thronging the city’s famous Sunday market although a larger presence of police was seen in the area.

The police have been telling people to disregard a WhatsApp message urging people to stay away from public places, especially the Gaya Street market, claiming that some people were planning to retaliate following the fatal shooting of two Suluk robbers in Penampang on Thursday.

On Thursday, police shot dead two suspected armed robbers in Penampang’s new township.

The police have yet to identify the duo, believed to be behind at least three heists involving over RM1mil in Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran, and are probing if they were linked to any royal Sulu force.

Sabah Suluk Solidarity Council secretary Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto called on the local Suluk community to reject extremist elements from southern Philippines.

He said that the group’s action to undermine Malaysia’s sovereignty had negatively affected the Suluks.
