DAP rep proposes rotation of Penang CM post

A DAP representative has proposed that the post of Penang chief minister be rotated and limited to two terms in order to give other leaders a chance to serve.

Tanjong Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu said the suggestion would allow other leaders to run Penang, including women.

"If we want to realise this, all parties need to work towards it from now. It is a good idea from the aspect of democracy and hopefully all quarters will support this proposition," he said in a debate session at the state assembly sitting yesterday.

The motion also received support from opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid and DAP Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey.

Jahara's support prompted state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh to ask why Barisan Nasional did not support a woman becoming a menteri besar in Selangor.

Jahara then hit out at Phee, saying she did not want to bring up the issue of the Kajang by-election as it would only affect PKR.

However, the motion was opposed by Air Hitam assemblyman and political secretary to the chief minister, Wong Hon Wai, who said the matter was irrelevant to the issue being debated.

Teh replied by saying each matter was relevant and asked for the motion to be supported.

The sitting resumes today. – Bernama
