Yong: One country, two systems only way to save Malaysia

KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee yesterday reiterated that adopting the “One Country, Two Systems” is the only way to save Malaysia.

He said such system would insulate Sabah and Sarawak from the racial and religious extremism that has put Malaysia at cross roads on its future destiny.

“A so-called ‘unity government’ does nothing to save Malaysia but to save DAP and Umno from the mess that they have dug themselves in,” he said yesterday in response to a recent Sabah DAP demand for any apology for commenting on DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang’s call for a unity government with Umno and other parties of the political divide.

“I will apologise if DAP can show how my statement of March 23 can twist Lim Kit Siang’s statement (as quoted by Sabah DAP) posted on his blog two days later on March 25 which repeated Lim’s call for a new coalition government.

“I will also apologise if DAP denied earlier media reports, including the one on Lim Kit Siang at Bukit Bintang last Sunday, calling for a ‘Save Malaysia’ coalition government ‘with MPs from both sides of the political divide’ to be led by a leader from ‘either side of the divide’,” he added.

Yong said he would further apologise if DAP can name a Prime Minister if not the incumbent PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to lead this coalition government.

“The reason, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is already disqualified. And the PAS leader Datuk Seri Hadi Awang has already been dismissed by DAP as ‘dishonest’. Who does DAP think would be the PM in a DAP coalition with Umno and other parties?

The former chief minister added that he would apologise again if DAP showed that they have never campaigned for PAS and Lim Guan Eng denied his famous written pledge signed by himself to “tengok bulan, pangkah bulan”.

In return, Yong reckoned that the DAP should apologise for misleading the people about the 2-party system and for lying about PAS not going ahead with their hudud implementation.

“I remind DAP about the public debate on hudud law organised by Gerakan Belia Bersatu Malaysia (GBBM) and DAP’s promises made before the general elections.”

The people, according to Yong, would have more respect for DAP if they do not craft their ties with PAS along lines of convenience instead of principles.

Instead of cutting ties with Selangor PAS with whom DAP shared power in Malaysia’s richest state and removing PAS from the DAP-led Penang state government, DAP chose to cut ties with PAS in Sabah. This is a hollow gesture devoid of principles.

“Unwilling to face the stark reality that all Pakatan, including PKR, and Umno, assemblymen in Kelantan voted for the “hudud law”, DAP chose to isolate PAS leader Hadi from the PAS party.

“As a matter of fact, Hadi is not even a member of the Kelantan state assembly. What is DAP going to do about the PAS and PKR assemblymen,” Yong contended.
