Penang PAS Youth threatens Permatang Pauh boycott

KUALA LUMPUR - Penang PAS Youth has threatened to boycott the Permatang Pauh by-election campaign in the latest sign of the chronic divisions within Pakatan Rakyat.

According to the PAS chapter’s Youth wing, it will not help campaign for the poll unless its DAP and PKR counterparts retract recent remarks made about the Islamist party's president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and hudud.

Penang PAS Youth chief Mohd Yusni Mat Piah was quoted by Berita Harian saying this was because PKR had allegedly questioned Hadi's loyalty by asking him to clarify his stand on an “Umno-PAS unity government” while DAP had opposed PAS's hudud agenda.

“We are purposely not joining the Permatang Pauh by-election campaign because we are urging Penang PKR and DAP Youth to retract those statements.

“Any form of cooperation will only take place once they have retracted their statements. We will wait for them to take action,” Mohd Yusni was quoted saying.

This comes after Permatang Pauh PAS information chief Jamsari Samad was quoted by The Star as warning PKR against fielding its president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail — the wife of jailed leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — or any of his family members in the by-election.

But Penang PAS deputy commissioner Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said yesterday the party, including both its national and state leaderships, firmly supports PKR’s choice of candidate, regardless of whom they pick.

The by-election was triggered by Anwar’s disqualification as MP last month, after his application for a royal pardon to his February 10 sodomy conviction was rejected.

PKR has already decided on its candidate to defend the Permatang Pauh seat, its stronghold, but is yet to reveal the person’s identity, although speculation points to Dr Wan Azizah as its likely pick.

The party is expected to make the announcement before April 23, and before its political opponent, Barisan Nasional, reveals its candidate.

Nominations for the by-election are on April 25 while polling will be held on May 7.
