Hunt for ex-minister's brother for attempted murder

KOTA KINABALU - A brother of a former Deputy federal minister Datuk Noh Omar is high on the police wanted list for shooting a man over the most trivial of reasons – the victim had asked him why he was staring.

The 43-year-old suspect, known as Mat Malaya, was described as “armed and dangerous” after he fired three shots, one of which hit the mechanic’s right calf.

Mat Malaya, (real name is Mohd Jusnaidi bin Omar) who is from Selangor, was once charged with drug trafficking in 2007.

He has been on the run since the shooting incident at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said Mat Malaya was armed and would not hesitate to shoot anyone.

“Anyone who sees this man or knows of his whereabouts has been advised to immediately inform the police and not act on their own,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

On the shooting incident, Jalaluddin said the mechanic went to an air-conditioner repair workshop and noticed Mat Malaya staring at him.

Uncomfortable, the mechanic approached Mat Malaya and asked him if there was a problem.

“A scuffle broke out and Mat Malaya whipped out a pistol and started firing at the man,” he said.

Three shots were fired, but only one hit the man.

The suspect fled the scene while people at the workshop took the victim to the hospital.

Police recovered a packet containing drugs, believed to be syabu, a weighing scale and a holster.

In an unrelated case, Jalaluddin said city police smashed a house-breaking and car theft group called Geng Ah Vui with the arrest of 11 Filipinos, including a woman.

The suspects were aged between 21 and 43.

Among the items recovered were five vehicles, two motorcycles and laptops that were reported stolen in five theft cases.

Noh Omar's brother flees Sabah home after alleged shooting

KOTA KINABALU - The brother of former Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar has fled the family home here after the alleged shooting of a man.

City police chief Assist Comm M. Chandra said the house of suspect Mohd Jusnaidi Omar (pix) in Likas was found deserted when police went there.

“No one was at home. He must have left with his family after the incident,” he said when contacted on Friday.

Police were on the hunt for Mohd Jusnaidi, 43, also known as Mat Malaya, after he allegedly shot an assistant mechanic following an argument at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

He was previously charged over a drug trafficking offence in 2007.

It is believed that police are monitoring major exit points in the state.

“Please inform your nearest police station if you know of this man’s whereabouts,” Chandra said.
