Chinese elected MP in UK says British born and bred

The first ethnic Chinese to be elected to the UK House of Commons has denied that he has Malaysian links as claimed by a news outlet.

In a report on Alan Mak from the Conservative party representing the southern UK city of Havant, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post identified him as of ‘Chinese-Malaysian’ background.

“I have no Malaysian connections actually, this has been misreported!,” he told Malay Mail Online via email.

It is stated on Mak’s website that he was born in York and that his Chinese parents fled their home nation to start up a small shop in the UK.

Mak also said that he decided join the Conservative party because of his family upbringing and realising the importance of freedom.

The 31-year-old won his seat today by beating challenger John Perry by 23,159 votes to 9,239.
