Home Ministry receives The Edge's reply to show-cause letter

PETALING JAYA - The Home Ministry has received a reply to the show-cause letter issued to The Edge Media Group for its reports on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Home Ministry's Publications Control and Al-Quran Text Division head Hashimah Nik Jaafar said that the reply had been received and was currently being studied.

When contacted, another officer said the Home ministry would issue a statement on the matter soon.

The Home Ministry issued a show-cause letter to financial daily The Edge on June 1 over its reports on Government investment arm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously stated that The Edge Media Group owner Datuk Tong Kooi Ong should be held responsible for "inaccurate reports" on 1MDB.

Dr Ahmad Zahid had added that news website Sarawak Report had become a source of false information on 1MDB, and that this false information had been later reported by The Edge and other media.

On Monday, The Edge Financial Daily released a four-page expose which claimed that Jho Low and Petrosaudi cheated Malaysia of US$1.83bil (RM6.97bil) via 1MDB.

It said that they had a "public duty to find and report the truth".

It also said that they would hand over all information in their possession to the authorities investigating 1MDB and assist in any way they could.

In response, 1MDB called the report "old, unsubstantiated and recycled" and claimed that The Edge exercised "irresponsible reporting."
