EssZone curfew extended to Aug 21

KOTA KINABALU - The 24th phase of the curfew in the waters off the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) which expires tomorrow would be extended to the 25th phase, beginning from Aug 6 until 21.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the curfew, from 7pm until 5 am, involving six districts, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Semporna, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau was extended for security considerations and upon public request.

In a statement today, he said the decision to extend the curfew was based on information of continued threats of Kidnapping For Ransom (KFR) and Abu Sayyaf rebels.

"This is to safeguard the safety and well-being of those plying the coastal waters as well as ensure the safety of tourists and Sabahans in the ESSZone," he said.

He said the extended curfew would enable security forces to carry out enforcement and monitoring of boat movements and suspicious activities in relation to human and drug trafficking and firearm smuggling.

Jalaluddin added that chalet operators and the fishing community were also supportive of the extension.

Meanwhile, Jalaluddin said district police chiefs in ESSZone had been authorised to issue permits to those applying for fishery activities or emergency travel. – Bernama
