Sultan: Don't fool rakyat by whitewashing country's woes

Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Iskandar of Johor has warned Putrajaya not to fool the rakyat by whitewashing the problems faced by the country.

"I would also like to remind representatives elected by the people to shoulder public responsibilities entrusted to them and to set aside personal interests.

"The rakyat today are a generation of smart and learned people who can dissect information they receive. So please do not take them as fools by feeding them rosy news and information to hide what is really going on.

"Deal with the problems at hand immediately," Sultan Ibrahim said in a speech in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Johor Special Forces Regiment. The speech was uploaded onto Facebook.

Sultan Ibrahim said this after lamenting about the instability that has hit the country, as well as the free fall of the ringgit.

The ringgit has lost almost a quarter of its value since a year ago, hitting a 17-year-low of RM4.26 to one US dollar yesterday.

Aside from falling oil prices, China's move to devalue the yuan, an expected interest rate hike in the US and the political crisis brewing in the country have also been attributed to the weak ringgit.

This is over the massive RM41.8 billion debt of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's brainchild, the 1MDB, and RM2.6 billion that was deposited into his personal bank accounts.
