Putrajaya won’t protect ex-envoy who pleaded guilty to NZ sex charge

KUALA LUMPUR - Putrajaya will not extend any form of protection to a former Malaysian attache who pleaded guilty to a sex crime in New Zealand today, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has said.

“Let him be punished.. I have never protected anyone in the context of getting justice…if they are found to be guilty, they must face the music and no protection from us, be it the defence ministry or the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM),” Hishammuddin told reporters in a press conference at the ministry’s office in Jalan Padang Tembak here.

Earlier today, the former military attache pleaded guilty to the indecent assault of a New Zealand woman, Tania Billingsley, with a court hearing that he burst into her bedroom naked from the wait down, foreign news wire Agence France Press (AFP) reported.

Mohammad Rizalman was attached to the Malaysian embassy in New Zealand in Wellington when the incident took place last year and when Billingsley’ case made headlines, he escaped back to Malaysia after invoking diplomatic immunity.

He was later on extradited back to New Zealand where he initially pleaded not guilty to attempted rape and burglary charges.
