The Star's computer confiscated after Mkini raid

The police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) visited English daily The Star's headquarters again this morning and requested to take away one of its computers.

This follows the raid on Malaysiakini yesterday where the police and the MCMC confiscated an editor's computer

Police also visited The Star's headquarters concurrently with the Malaysiakini raid yesterday, but did not confiscate anything at the time.

The authorities are investigating both news publications over their reports about the transfer of deputy public prosecutor Shazalee Abdul Khairi.

The officer was part of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation into SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB's.

According to The Star Online today, the police and MCMC officers arrived at Menara Star at around 10.55am.

"The journalist who wrote the news reports was asked a few questions by the team.

"They also requested to take away the computer used to write the news reports," the daily reported.

The two articles in question are Malaysiakini's 'Sudden transfer for MACC prosecutor' and The Star's 'MACC prosecutor 'shocked' over sudden transfer'.

The investigation against Malaysiakini and The Star were based on a complaint lodged by the Attorney-General's Chambers on Nov 3.

A police case brief revealed the complaint was filed by an officer with the AG’s Chambers and is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.

"It was found the articles contained defamatory elements and a police report was lodged on the issue as there was ill-intention and it damaged the good name of the Attorney-General's Chambers," the brief states.

This is despite de facto Law Minister Nancy Shukri confirming on Thursday that Shazalee had been given an internal transfer within MACC.

AG Mohamed Apandi Ali has insisted the point in contention is that Shazalee was not transferred out of the MACC.

However, Malaysiakini's article never stated whether Shazalee was transferred out or within the MACC.
