Motion on kidnapping in Sabah waters to be debated today

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 — A motion on the kidnapping of four Malaysians by armed pirates in the waters off Semporna, Sabah, on Friday was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The motion which was tabled by Silam MP Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur will be debated from 4.30pm until 5.30pm today.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said said Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia received a notification on the motion yesterday.

He said the motion met the three conditions — it involved a specific issue, was of public interest and had urgency.

“As such, I allowed it to be debated,” Ismail said.

Earlier, when tabling the motion, Datu Nasrun said although the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) and the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) played crucial roles in protecting the safety of Sabah waters, there was still much to be improved including upgrading the security level to avoid a repeat of the incident.

He said collaborations with the Philippine marine security authorities should also be strengthened to curb kidnappings in the waters of both countries.

“In connection to this, the Dewan must discuss this motion to find a solution and effective and comprehensive approach for the sake of the safety of the people of Sabah,” he said.

Four Malaysians — Wong Teck Kang, 31; Wong Hung Sing, 34; Wong Teck Chii, 29, and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21, were kidnapped by eight armed men in the waters off Ligitan, at about 6.15pm last Friday.

They were among nine crew members of a tug boat which was returning from the Philippines to Malaysia. — Bernama
