3 statues of Hindu deities vandalised at Penang temple

GEORGE TOWN - Three statues of Hindu deities were found vandalised at the Sri Muneiswaran Temple in Jalan Tengku Kudin early Sunday.

Northeast District police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said vandals damaged the statues, comprising two with a snake head and one with an elephant head, about 5.30am.

Damage was estimated at more than RM1,000.

In a statement today, Mior Faridalatrash said the temple’s gardener found the statues desecrated when he came to clean the statues.

He said the case was investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intent to insult a religion.

This is the fourth reported case of vandalism at a Hindu temple within a span of two months where deities were damaged intentionally, the first being at a Hindu temple in Penanti Estate, Ara Kuda in early June. - Bernama
