Anwar meets King over A-G's appointment

PETALING JAYA - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is having an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the next Attorney-General.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, who is Lembah Pantai MP, confirmed this in a tweet that Anwar was at Istana Negara on Monday (June 4) night to resolve the impasse.

Earlier, The Malaysian Insight reported that the PKR adviser was seeking an audience with the King.

"My duty as a citizen with some influence is to discuss (with the Rulers) and give them assurances. What I passed to them was that in 60 years, the royal families had worked with the leadership of Umno and Barisan Nasional.

"Now the situation has changed. But the constitution has not changed. The status of the Malay Rulers has not changed,” Anwar told TMI after meeting several heads of state recently.

The Government has nominated lawyer Thomas as the Attorney-General, but Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V reportedly has reservations about the choice because he is not a Malay-Muslim.

With reservations of the Palace over the Government's choice of A-G, the Malay Rulers are expected to deliberate on the appointment of the new A-G on Tuesday (June 5).

Constitutional experts said the Federal Constitution allows for the appointment of a non-Muslim as Attorney-General on the advice of the Prime Minister, with the King having no say in it.
