KUALA LUMPUR - PAS central committee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was punched and beaten up by unknown individuals upon returning home from Subuh prayers early today.
The incident was confirmed to have happened in the front yard of his house by PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat after performing the dawn prayers at a nearby surau.
"When he was attacked, Dzulkifli was still in his car and he was punched in the face until he had a cut on his forehead. After assaulting him, one of the attackers asked, 'kenapa kurang ajar sangat?' (why so uncouth?)," he told Bernama.
He said Dzulkefly wanted to go after his attackers but they fled when he opened his car door.
According to Suhaizan, a police report on the assault incident had been lodged.
Suhaizan who was saddened by the incident, did not dismiss the possibility of certain quarters taking advantage of the current situation in the party to create provocation against the PAS leadership.
"Their evil intention is to split PAS. May Allah punish them for their misdeed," he said.
After the incident, Bernama tried to contact Dzulkefly for his reaction but was unsuccessful and it was learnt that the PAS Research Centre executive director was resting and being treated at a hospital in the federal capital.
Dzulkefly had been outspoken about attempts by certain quarters to undermine the ulama leadership and to cause a split in the party, and he had also reminded candidates contesting in the party elections in June not to succumb to emotions and do anything that could damage the party's image when campaigning.
Besides Dzulkefly, a number of PAS leaders have also faced condemnation, arising from the party's current internal conflict between the ulama and "liberal" factions.
On Feb 14, a car belonging to Kuala Krai Member of Parliament Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli, who is also the party's election director, was set on fire.
There is also the case of a voice recording, allegedly of PAS deputy president Mat Sabu speaking on wanting to topple the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, which has gone viral on social media since Feb 23. - Bernama
