According to former Umno Penampang deputy chief Datuk Fredie Sua, UPKO Penampang Youth information chief Billy Joe Dominic’s allegation against John was baseless.
Fredie, who was the Umno election director for Moyog during the 13th general election, said: “Being his (John) deputy at that time, I know no such thing had happened.
“It is unbecoming for an UPKO Penampang Youth leader to make such an accusation. Also, if he alleged that the Umno Penampang chief did that, then he is also accusing the whole Umno division too,” Fredie said yesterday.
“We (Umno Penampang) do not work that way and I am of the opinion that Billy should apologise for making such an allegation against John,” he stressed.
He also felt that the new BN chairman for Penampang should call for a meeting with all the component parties as soon as possible to resolve the problem as prolonging the issue would not benefit anyone.
Penampang, he said was an ‘opposition’ area and thus the need to work together to win back the confidence and support of the people.
Internal issues like what was happening now would not augur well for the hard work of BN, he said.
“When John spoke about issues affecting Penampang and suggested that PBS be given the Penampang seat, he was just voicing out his opinion. It is his right to do so because everyone is entitled to his own opinion.
“So it is not fair for Billy to hit out at him just because he voiced out his opinion,” he said.
Fredie was of the opinion that BN lost the Penampang seat because there was no cohesive campaigning by the BN component parties, unlike during the 12th general election where the coalition’s candidates had gone on their campaign trail together.
“The problem then was that we never had any BN meetings before the 13th general election and I believe the then BN Penampang chairman Tan Sri Bernard Dompok had met with the component parties individually.
“There was no proper campaign strategy and all the BN component parties were campaigning on their own, not as a coalition. I believe because of this, the people in Penampang did not see the cooperation among BN and it is among the main reasons why BN lost in Penampang,” he opined.
According to him, in the 12th general election, Dompok had called for a BN meeting and a campaign strategy was set up which resulted in a win for BN in the constituency.
Fredie was responding to Billy’s recent statement where he accused John of campaigning against the BN candidate for Penampang, Dompok.
“There were accusations and admissions from quite a number of voters in Penampang that John had silently campaigned against Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in the 13th general election. His recent outburst against UPKO could probably verify these rumours. John is trying to drag PBS into the issue,” Billy claimed.
John has responded to Billy’s statement by giving the latter one week to apologize for making the accusation, failing which the former will take legal action against him.
Efforts to contact Billy to comment on John’s statement have been to no avail.
