According to one of the victims who only wanted to be identified as Wong, 28, a car spare-parts salesman, he read an advertisement in a local Chinese newspaper stating that Singapore's six-star cruise liner was recruiting staff for various positions on board the ship and those interested to contact Mr Goh at 010-2156676.
Early this month, he said, he called Mr Goh and told him of his intention to work on the ship.
"The man told me to deposit RM300 into his bank account in order for me to attend the course," he said at the press conference organised by the Pasir Gudang MCA public complaint bureau deputy chief Lim Thow Siang at the South Johor Chinese Press Club yesterday.
He said the man called him again a few days later and told him that he was in charge of recruitment for the Singapore Cruise company and asked him to deposit another RM910 for insurance.
On Dec 27 about 11am, Wong said, the man called again and said that he need to deposit another RM3,000 before 4.30pm for the company to open an account for him with a Singapore Bank.
"The man told me to do if I want the job and that the course will commence on Dec 29 at a local five star hotel here. I banked in the money the same day," said Wong.
He said he went to the hotel and four others were also there to attend the course.
The four who were also present at the press conference identified themselves as Moey and Lau, 28, from Penang and Kuala Lumpur respectively who paid RM3,000 each, Chong, 34, from Sabah who paid RM300 and Koh, 50, from Penang who paid RM3,000.
Becoming suspicious that something was amiss, the five men checked with the hotel management and were told there was no such course organised at the premise.
They then lodged a police report at the Johor Baru Selatan police station about 2.30pm Tuesday.
Lim told reporters that the conman used his mobile phone and WeChat to communicate with his victims.
