Former judge: IGP lacks professionalism

KUALA LUMPUR - The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar should be more professional and neutral when making statements regarding controversial issues such as the anti-Christianisation seminar held at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Malacca campus last week, said retired Court of Appeal judge Mohd Hishamuddin Yunus.

Hishamuddin, during a forum organised by the Bar Council today, said this in regard to a recent statement Khalid made that there was nothing wrong in a police officer being asked to speak at such a seminar.

The former judge also said that UiTM, instead of promoting division among those of different religions should have instead endeavoured to encourage students to learn and understand the faiths of others.

“Universities should encourage interfaith mingling, interaction. But on the issue of the IGP’s statement, with respect, the IGP should be more professional in whatever he says.

“He should give the appearance that ‘I am the IGP, I am neutral and I am the custodian of the public conscience’,” he said.

On Wednesday, Khalid said his police officers had the right to attend any seminar as long as it is not against the law.

This, the nation’s top cop explained, included the anti-Christianisation seminar organised by Universiti Technologi Mara (UiTM) at its Lendu campus.

It was reported on December 12 that one of the speakers had presented a slideshow that bore the logo of the police alongside that of UiTM. A screen shot of the slideshow has since gone viral.

Malacca police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said the talk was to “strengthen the faith” of Muslim students and did not contain any elements of sedition.
