Philippines Armed Forces tracking down whereabouts of 4 Msians seized by Abu Sayyaf

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) forces is tracking down the whereabouts of four Malaysians who were reportedly seized late Friday by Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Semporna, Malaysia.

Maj. Filemon Tan, Westmincom information officer, on Saturday confirmed to have received report but they have no complete information of the incident.

“We confirm receiving reports of this incident but information remains sketchy at the moment and efforts are being exerted to ascertain all details on the incident,” Tan said.

Reports disclosed the incident occurred around 7 p.m. Friday in the waters off Ligitan near the east coast Semporna and towards the border of the Philippines.

Reports further said that eight gunmen aboard a speedboat boarded a Malaysian-registered vessel and seized the victims. The vessel was sailing near Ligitan Island.

At gunpoint, the suspected Abu Sayyaf brigands reportedly ordered the four Malaysians to transfer into the speedboat and sped off to the high seas.

Tan said they have coordinated with their Malaysian counterparts “but details of which we are not at liberty to divulge.”

“In the meantime, Westmincom forces remain on alert and have taken appropriate action/operations to address the situation,” he added.
