KOTA KINABALU - Opposition pact Gabungan Sabah is unhappy that Umno is still a part of Sabah politics after its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today that the party would remain in the state.
Gabungan Sabah chairman Mohd Noor Mansoor said Zahid did not seem to have his finger on the pulse of Sabahans or understand their grievances when they asked for greater autonomy for Sabah Umno.
He contended that the results of the May 9 polls should be adequate indication that a majority of Sabahans are opposed to parties across the South China Sea staying or operating in the state.
“The main point is not to have Malayan parties participating in the new coalition of Sabah political parties.
“The last general election was ample proof of the strong sentiments on Sabah rights,” he said after chairing the monthly Gabungan Sabah Central Council meeting here today.
Earlier today, Zahid officially received a memorandum from Sabah Umno seeking autonomy to govern itself in the state.
He said he wanted the request to be endorsed by the party’s Supreme Council, adding that they will amend Umno’s constitution to include the demands by its Sabah counterparts.
Noor said Gabungan Sabah shared the same struggle with Gabungan Bersatu Sabah (GBS), the latest opposition bloc in Sabah, which is to uphold and restore the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
However, the former state minister said parties from the peninsula should demonstrate their sincerity on equal status for Bornean states by leaving Sabah.
“In short, equal status means that no parties from Malaya should be set up in Sabah or Sarawak.
”Recently, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged the equal status of Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya.
“Equal status and autonomy mean Malayan-based parties should not meddle in the affairs of Sabah (or) Sarawak-based parties,” he said. - FMT
