PETALING JAYA - The concept of shared prosperity will be the thrust of the government’s policies and programmes in its bid to make Malaysia a developed, dignified and sovereign nation, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Prime Minister said Pakatan Harapan, which took over the government last year, had announced the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 with the intention of ensuring every rakyat enjoy the economic benefits and prosperity together in a fairer and more equitable manner.
He said the country will continue to be peaceful and prosperous, adding that the success the nation is enjoying now is due to the sacrifices made by leaders during independence as well as others in facing the challenges.
“Although Pakatan has been in power for a little over one year, Alhamdulillah, it has shown high commitment and brought success in many matters, taking into account the financial position of the country that was inherited from the (previous government).
“We will not rest on our laurels and be satisfied with the achievements thus far. Measures will be quadrupled to restore Malaysia as one of Asia’s most important economic axis,” said Dr Mahathir at the installation of Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Dr Mahathir said the nation’s economic growth will continue and initiatives to rebuild the country to be prosperous will be intensified.
He acknowledged that although there are global economic uncertainties and geopolitical turmoil, the government will continue to give confidence to the rakyat that it is able to withstand such challenges and minimise the negative impact that the country may face.
“I also hope that the rakyat will continue to support the government in facing these challenges to help realise the plans and policies to develop our beloved nation,” said Dr Mahathir.
He said national development will be meaningless if the people are still living in poverty and are sidelined.
“The government will work harder to reduce the rising cost of living. This will include improving purchasing power and reducing the income gap between classes, races and districts.
“At the same time, the cooperation of all parties is needed to ensure the rising cost of goods and cost of living can be handled in a holistic manner,” he added.
The premier said the government’s machinery, which was exemplary to other countries before, will continue to be placed at a high level, especially in the era of globalisation and the Industry Revolution 4.0.
An effective government delivery system will have a positive impact on competitiveness and durability, which will contribute further to the wellbeing and prosperity of the country, added Dr Mahathir.
The government will also always pay attention to improving unity and harmony in the country, said Dr Mahathir.
The Prime Minister said that cooperation and tolerance among the different religions, races and cultures have been the keys to the country’s success all this time.
“Malaysia will fail if there is no unity among the rakyat. Although there have been some small incidences, the overall unity among the people is stable and good.
“The efforts to increase unity among the people do not rest on the shoulders of the government alone; it is a collective responsibility,” added Dr Mahathir.
The Prime Minister said that in order to maintain peace and harmony, the government has formed the Consultative Council for People’s Harmony (Majlis Perundingan Keharmonian Rakyat), which will act as an independent body to advise the administration on issues related to unity and social wellbeing.
Dr Mahathir also said that the government will continue to uphold the Federal Constitution, the rule of law and to ensure democracy remains for the stability of the nation.
He added that the government is serious in tackling all the problems that have affected the rakyat’s wellbeing and damaged the image of the country on the international platform.
