Middlemen are selling MyKads in Sabah for between RM5,000 and RM20,000 apiece, even as NRD admits that hopeful foreigners are lining up to get their bit of Malaysia.
KOTA KINABALU: Even as Malaysian-born Indians and native Orang Asli children in Peninsular Malaysia are forced to prove their legitimacy as citizens, over in Sabah the federal government is freely granting “stateless” children citizenship simply because it is “too expensive” to travel to report the birth of these children.

Citizenship applicants told to 'vote for ruling party'
Aidila Razak
A permanent resident applying for citizenship has claimed that immigration officers had told her that her main duty, if granted citizenship, would be to vote for the “ruling party”.
In an email interview, the applicant, who was born and bred in Malaysia, said the officers had explicitly said this to her when she was being interviewed as part of the citizenship application process.

NRD shields itself, blames outdated database again
Aidila Razak
The National Registration Department admitted that failure to update its database has resulted in another case where an apparently non-citizen is listed as a voter.
According a NRD spokesperson Jainisah Mohd Noor, 27-year-old Pandan voter Yusnati Haris Lakmana, who is listed as a holder of a temporary identity card on the NRD website, is in fact a citizen.
"We ran a check and found that she was granted citizenship in 2008," said the officer.
She said that Yusnati is still listed as a green IC holder on the website because the publicly-accessible database is not updated.

Only Sabah recognises mixed-race
One Malaysia, but three sets of registration rules
The attempt by Subang Jaya assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh and her husband to register their daughter's race as 'Anak Malaysia' has exposed the rigidity of our national registration system.
Not only that, Malaysiakini found that there are three different registration rules in the country - for Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula - although the registration bodies all come under the National Registration Department (NRD).

NRD should focus on weeding out illegal immigrants
The Government, Eric stressed, should not be too concerned about genuine Malaysians applying for their identification documents but instead focus on weeding out illegal immigrants who have obtained Malaysian identification documents through dubious means.
