Anwar: Revival of 'unity' talk due to Umno's desperation

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said UMNO was now being forced to seek cooperation with PAS out of desperation.

He was responding to an online comment suggesting that PAS should join the Barisan Nasional coalition, following PAS Murshidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s confirmation of reports that he had been instructed to be present at a palace dinner hosted by the Yang DiPertuan Agong on December 24 together with UMNO president Najib Razak.

“When UMNO finds itself stuck, they ask PAS for cooperation. Stop corruption, oppression and tyranny first,” said Anwar in a Twitter posting.

Yesterday at a press conference, Nik Aziz explained he and party president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang were present at the dinner, ending speculation that there were talks of 'cooperation' between PAS and UMNO.

Invitation conveyed by Abdullah

The Kelantan Menteri Besar said the invitation had been conveyed to him by former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who visited him at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian where Nik Aziz underwent treatment.

“Out of respect for Tuanku’s order, I attended the function,” said Nik Aziz, who said he could not reveal details of conversation during the dinner as it would be "unethical".

Nik Aziz urged the media and individuals to stop making unnecessary statements over the royal dinner.
At the same press conference, Hadi stressed there was no discussion on the so-called 'unity government' during the dinner as speculated by several blogs and news portals.
