I'm firm about hudud laws: Nik Aziz

Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat said today it did not matter to him if the DAP wanted to quit the Pakatan coalition if PAS were to go ahead with its plans to implement hudud laws and turn Malaysia into a fully Islamic state, should it come into power.

"I am firm about this, implementing hudud laws has been talked about for some 50 years and is not something new. There has been endless dialogues on it.

"DAP had previously pulled out from the opposition pact Angakatan Perpaduan Ummah (APU) because of this (implementing hudud laws). If now they want to do the same (pull out from the Pakatan coalition because of hudud laws, that is their problem," he told reporters after attending a civic function at Pusat Tarbiyah Islamiah Kelantan (Putik) here today.

Unless this is a sad joke, PAS has outdone itself this time.

It was reported that Kedah Mentri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak has called on live-band performances with singers at bars, hotels, restaurants and eating outlets and areas that can be easily accessed by the public to close down during the Holy month of Ramadan as a show of respect. Entertainment outlets, including karaoke centres and discotheques, will not be allowed to operate during Ramadan in Kedah.

Cybercafés, bowling and snooker centres are however allowed to open. Azizan also said that all Chinese eateries and outlets that cater to international customers would be allowed to operate as usual. These include fast-food restaurants such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's and Pizza Hut.

Still no magic after the Vatican-Malaysia alliance

Datuk Seri Najib’s recent visit to the Vatican is admittedly something to be glad about for all peoples of Malaysia, regardless of their religious beliefs and practices. However, I tend to agree with Tan Sri Bernard Dompok who said the visit promises no magic.

He should know because he also was part of Tun Mahathir’s delegation in the first official visit to the Vatican to meet the late Pope John Paul II.

As Malaysians, we have to wonder as to why the visit was made at this time. It is very probable that Najib wanted to catch two birds with one stone with the visit, to appease Malaysian Christians who have been deeply hurt by all the mistreatments and shenanigans thrown at them, and to help rebuild Malaysia’s image abroad after all the negative publicity generated in the international media which painted the Malaysian government as having a strong anti-Christian internal policy.

The PAS-led Kedah government will not revoke its controversial ban on entertainment outlets during Ramadan despite pleas from its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) partner DAP to do so, a state official said today.

Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, political secretary to Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, issued a strongly-worded statement today that the state government will not withdraw the ruling despite opposition, saying the government was just enforcing a 1997 law.
