The EC's 'refusal' to delete thousands of names in the electoral list despite the NRD's stand that "the names don't exist" may result in a court case.
PENAMPANG: Opposition Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is considering taking the Election Commission (EC) to court if it refuses to delete the over 42,000 questionable names in the electoral rolls.
SAPP deputy president Eric Majimbun said this at a gathering at Kampung Koidupan, near here, even as over 80,000 people rallied for electoral reforms in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.
He said that while the National Registration Department (NRD) confirmed that some 42,000 names do not exist, the EC on its end claimed that it could not delete the names.
“They (EC) are giving many excuses,” Majimbun said.
He said this is what the Bersih 3.0 sit-in rally held simultaneously nationwide was demanding for – a clean and fair election.
He said among Bersih’s eight demands for electoral reforms is the cleaning up of the election roll which is riddled with irregularities such as the names of deceased persons, multiple registrations under a single address and non-existent addresses.
Majimbun also described the other parties in the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition as mere assistants, saying that development funds for every parliamentary seat in the state including his is controlled by Umno.
He cited the Sepanggar constituency, which contains two state assembly seats represented by PBS (Inanam) and Umno (Karambunai) but the funds are held by the Sepanggar Umno divisional chief.
Majimbun said the other glaring example of how Sabah is a puppet government controlled by Kuala Lumpur is the way the appointment of chief minister and the selection of BN candidates for election are made.
Elect local candidates
He said that the Sabah chief minister is an appointee of Umno leaders in Kuala Lumpur because the prerogative to select the Sabah Umno liaison chief lies in the hands of the Umno president.
The same, he said, goes for every BN candidate in an election who is issued with a “letter of appointment” signed by the Umno president.
Meanwhile, former state finance minister Mohd Noor Mansur, who was among senior SAPP leaders at the gathering, lashed out at BN component parties from the peninsula like MCA, MIC and Gerakan which were grabbing seats and positions in Sabah at the expense of local BN component parties.
Citing an example, he said, MCA had occupied the Kepayan state seat through its Sabah MCA liaison chief Edward Khoo, who was an outsider.
He said it was time for the people in the constituency under which Kampung Koidupan falls to elect a local candidate in the coming 13th general election.
Mohd Noor, who is a SAPP adviser, said a local candidate knows the needs of the local people better than outsiders like Khoo who hails from Sandakan.
Also at the gathering were SAPP president Yong Teck Lee, party information chief Chong Pit Fah and SAPP supreme council members Peter Marajin and Stephen Gaimin.
Why go to court on 42000 names only? What about many more PATI who are now registered voters?
ReplyDeleteNo of not qualify candidate still a lot, must be more than 42k. Please investigate?
DeleteSigning a petition is also a useless move, they will not be easily convinced with a few thousands of signatures.
DeleteWhat about pursuing EC big guns for being UMNO members?
ReplyDeleteSAPP had better get ready few million ringgits just in case they lose the case to EC.
ReplyDeleteSAPP is used to getting sued, Yong Teck Lie have plenty of money.
DeleteThe Electoral Commission have decided to appoint 6 political observers from NGO and outsiders to witness our next general election.
ReplyDeleteNot only Sabah but the entire Malaysia. The EC should come with solution for PATI and maintain clean name list.
DeleteJust bring this matter to court and let us see how far it will go. This matter should not be speculated too much and bring confusion to the public.
