SAPP: Ministry in the dark on Minimum Wage Order

Sabah State Assembly Sitting News - IT is strange that the state Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry is not aware that the Minimum Wage Order 2012 had been gazetted on July 16, Luyang assemblywoman Melanie Chia said.

“How can the ministry not know that it had been gazetted when it was published in all the media? This only confirms that the ministry is not working, and is sleeping,” the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Women chief said.

Chia who met reporters at the state assembly sitting yesterday, said this when responding to a reply she received from Assistant Resource Development and Technology Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid.

Jainab when replying to Chia’s initial question on implementation of the minimum wage for the private sector in Sabah, said it would be done after the Minimum Wage Order 2012 was gazetted.

However, when Chia pointed out to her that the order had been gazetted on July 16, Jainab said the information the ministry received from the Manpower Department was that it was not so.

“We will check (with the Manpower Department) and if it has been gazetted, then ‘Alhamdullilah’, Jainab said.

Chia said not only was the ministry in the dark, Jainab had not actually answered her question of how the state government was going to ensure that all employers adhered to the minimum wage order when it was implemented.

    1. Get your facts right, it was Jainab Ayid who made the statement that he is unaware of the Minimum Wage Order 2012 being gazetted. Not Datuk Yee Moh Chai. It's all in the article.

  4. Well, a minister should know what is happening around them and they should aware about it. Next time need to be more careful and please study more so that you won't be humiliated by others. Please read the below information :

Further, the date of implementation for the minimum wage is six months after the order is issued.

“However, to make way for small-time employers to be fully prepared so their business won’t be jeopardised, the date of implementation for this category of employers is 12 months from the date of order when the minimum wage is gazetted,” she said.

Jainab was replying to Luyang assemblywoman, Melanie Chia, at the assembly yesterday.

She said the Sabah Labour Department would enforce the implementation of a minimum wage for the private sector once the Ministry of Human Resource issues the gazette order.

In reminding all employers in Sabah to implement the minimum wage, she said several briefings had already been given on the matter.

Well, it is been stated clearly by Datuk Jainab, Hopefully the issue will be not rising up again.

  5. What ever it is CM is going to have a further discussion on the minimum wage. He stated that the minimum wage policy should by right not only protect employees but also employers. Rest assured, the government values the contribution of the business community to the economy and will not purposely create a situation that will cause disadvantage to business.

So, what say you? It is better to wait for Datuk Musa to look into the matter.
