PETALING JAYA: PKR today alleged that businessman Deepak Jaikishan spent about RM13 million in 2009 to purchase jewellery for Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.
Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters here, PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli said that the purchases involved 19 different types of jewellery from Hong Kong, ranging from necklaces to rings and bracelets.
“The purchases took place between March and May 2009, the time Najib became the prime minister,” said Rafizi.
Also present at the press conference were PKR MPs William Leong and Zuraida Kamaruddin.
Rafizi also produced several documents, including invoices and bank payment records made to two luxury jewellery companies based in Hong Kong – Dehres Limited and Firestone Corporation Limited.
The payments for the jewellery were made by two companies linked to Deepak – Carpet Raya Sdn Bhd and Carpet Plus Sdn Bhd.
Rafizi urged the authorities to investigate, alleging that the matter was nothing short of a corrupt act.
He said that it would not be difficult for an agency like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate as each luxury jewellery is unique, with its own reference code.
“For example, Deepak’s company made payment for the purchase of a diamond ring, code DR 2763, worth US$1.5 million.
“So we have its code and the MACC could easily trace this matter if it hauls up Deepak for an investigation,” Rafizi said, adding that it would be difficult for anyone to forge a bank record.
On arguments that Deepak could have purchased the jewellery for his own use, Rafizi said, “True but I don’t see Deepak wearing the jewellery.”
He added that the matter could be a tip of the iceberg as the transactions mentioned are only those made known to PKR.

On a related matter, Leong urged MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed to probe Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera’s (LTAT) decision to purchase an 80% stake in Deepak’s company Astacanggih Sdn Bhd.
Last month, Deepak decided to drop his lawsuit against Awan Megah Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Selangor Wanita Umno leader Raja Roopiah Raja Abdullah, on a case involving a land deal that went sour.
Subsequently, a unit with LTAT, Boustead Holdings Bhd, acquired the 80% stake in Astacanggih.
Leong said that MACC’s continues silence on Deepak’s disclosures wil only tarnish the anti-graft body’s image among the public.
“It will show the public that MACC is not independent and is beholden to the powers-that-be,” he said.
Added Rafizi: “If the MACC refuses to investigate, we will have another press conference on Friday to reveal details on the land agreement between the Selangor Umno Wanita leader and the government.”

DeleteIn other words, PKR makes a claim and then says anybody that doesn't take its wild allegation seriously is tarnished by their inaction. This is absolute nonsense but consistent with Pakatan Rakyat's insidious campaign to sully the reputation of our institutions like the MACC so that in the event of losing GE13 it can claim it was "robbed by a corrupt regime".
DeleteDeepak is a controversial figure who can spark allegations of conspiracy just by walking into a room, so it is astonishing that Rafizi is even mentioning his name. His lawsuit against a company owned by a Wanita Umno leader was quietly dropped by Deepak just days ago without fanfare, one of the rare times "without fanfare" occurs in the same sentence as his name.
DeleteHe is also at the heart of claims that he conspired with Anwar to launch coordinated attacks against Najib Razak and his wife. On that basis alone, Rafizi should keep his mouth shut and the rakyat should take any allegations involving him with a pinch of salt.
DeleteBut PKR has a long tradition of targeting Najib's family because it is so tellingly unable to land a body blow on the PM himself over any real issue such as economic management. Rosmah and the rest of Najib's family are seen as an easier target.
DeleteIn 2011, PKR's Badarul Hisham Saharin seized on newspaper reports that the PM's daughter had enjoyed a RM200,000 shopping spree in Perth, Western Australia during the CHOGM meeting.
DeleteHe didn't bother to check the veracity of the story that was within days retracted by the West Australian newspaper in a humiliating climb down. "The West Australian acknowledges that this was not the case and that Najib's daughter was not in Perth at the time," it confessed. Not such acknowledgement was forthcoming from Badarul.
DeleteLikewise, last year when it was alleged that Rosmah spent RM325,000 on another alleged shopping spree in Sydney. The report came from the Sydney Morning Herald's trashy gossip column Private Sydney which regularly reports tittle-tattle about models, celebrities, footballers and prostitutes. The only common thread in these reports is that none of them are substantiated.
DeleteThere used to be a gentleman's rule in politics that elected representatives are fair game for most forms of attack but their families should be kept out of it. PKR ignores this rule because quite frankly, it can't afford to abide by bit. It needs all the help it can get.
DeleteAs we get closer to GE13, expect PKR and the rest of Pakatan Rakyat to become more desperate and the personal attacks to intensify. If they succeed in distracting voters from the real issues for even a short time they will consider it to be a helpful, if grubby, victory.
