SAPP: Sabahans, wake up for clean governance

SAPP says Sabah remains a poor state despite its abundant natural resources is because of the Barisan Nasional government.

KOTA KINABALU: Despite being blessed with abundant natural resources, Sabah remains a poor state with low living standards and the Barisan Nasional (BN) government which rules the state is answerable for this.

Sabah Progressive Party, Liawan constituency liaison committee vice -chairman Joseph Wilfred Lakai, said the usual answer that “development plans are in the works” does not hold water.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, he said, could start by answering why Malaysians have not directly benefited from the RM500 billion oil revenue (of Petronas) whilst Singaporeans without a single cent of earning from oil revenue can benefit from RM24 billion these last five years?

“It is important that Malaysians seek accountability and economic justice not only from the Sabah BN government but more importantly from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. This is crucial in order to prevent all our oil revenue from being further misused by the ‘privileged few’,” said Lakai.

He said the problem Malaysia is facing is corruption and mismanagement of its enormous wealth that is not being shared equitably among the people.

“As an oil producer and exporter, Malaysians have not received a single cent of oil revenues even though Petronas earned RM500 billion since it was established 31 years ago in 1974. If this RM500 billion was shared with every needy Malaysian, they would get at least RM20,000 each.

“But Malaysians have not received a single cent of oil revenues due to extensive corruption by the BN government, ,” he said.

Lakai went on to note that former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently revealed that Petronas was expected to earn RM83 billion last year.

“After deducting tax and royalties of RM40 billion, fuel subsidies of RM 13 billion, Petronas will still have RM 40 billion left. If this was distributed to needy Malaysians, each young and old would get RM 2,000.

“A household of five would receive RM 10,000 per year and would not fear price hikes. But why have we not received a single cent when this is our birthright as oil revenues from our oil resources belongs not to one company or to any individual but to all Malaysians in the oil producing states.

“If a non-oil producer like Singapore can give S$2.6 billion (RM6 billion) cash to all Singaporeans, the Malaysian government too should be able to do so especially when Petronas has earned nearly RM500 billion since its inception in 1971.

“Oil importer Singapore has given $10.675 billion (RM24 billion) directly to its people since 2000 as compared to Petronas which has not given a single cent,” he said.

Lakai also claimed that Sabah is the worst managed and worst state to live in Malaysia with scores of pressing issues like, the second lowest water supply coverage, the highest population growth, the largest number of illegal immigrants, the highest poverty incidence, the poorest electricity/ energy efficiency and the least developed state in Malaysia.

“Malaysia has the worst income disparity in South-East Asia between the rich and poor with the share of income of the bottom 40% of the population enjoying only 13.5% whilst the share of the top 20% increased 51.2%. The income disparity is clearly much worse in Sabah where the rich have become richer whilst the poor remain poor,” he said.

He said this conclusion was derived from a thorough study and analysis of the Ninth Malaysian Plan which stated among others:
  • Sabah has the second lowest water supply coverage of 75% throughout the state just ahead of the 70% water supply coverage in Kelantan;
  • Sabah has also the highest population growth rate in the country at 3.1% as compared to the national average of 2.3%. Its population jumped by 530,000 or more than 20% in the space of 5 years from 2.6 million in 2000 to 3.13 million in 2005.
  • Sabah has the largest number of illegal immigrants and those with genuine ICs under “Project M” estimated at nearly 1 million. The extraordinary growth of the Sabah population can be shown that in 1960, the Kadazandusun population was 168,000 and equaled the number of other Bumiputeras. In 2000, while the Kadazandusun Murut population increased to 560,000, the population of other Bumiputeras had grown to 1.1 million;
Sabah has the worst energy efficiency with shocking system losses of 19.5%, units sold per employee (Gwh) of only 1.29 and System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) of 4,109 minutes per customer per year. In other words, 4,109 minutes is lost from power interruptions in Sabah each year or almost 3 days out of 365 days.

No wonder Sabah is known as the ‘Land With Power Cuts’. This compares unfavorably with TNB’s system losses of 10.5%, 3.05 Gwh units sold and 147 SAIDI or only 147 minutes lost per year in Peninsular Malaysia;
  • Sabah has the worst incidence of poverty at 23% in 2004 as compared to Sarawak’s 7.5% and Kelantan’s 10.6%. The incidence of poverty in Peninsular Malaysia is 3.6% and for the entire country 5.7%; and
  • Sabah ranked last on the Development Composite Index (DCI) scoring 90 as compared to the highest of 109.6 of Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Even Kelantan is ahead of Sabah with a DCI of 93.1;
“Clearly, being the last developed state in Malaysia is the reward to Sabahans for giving absolute power to BN without any meaningful opposition in the state. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

“The time has come for Sabahans to wake up by restoring democracy by voting in the opposition to provide a strong and effective Sabah government to fight for political equality, socio-economic justice and fight for a clean and good governance.

He stressed that Sabahans had nothing more to lose since it has the highest incidence of poverty incidence at 23%.

  2. SABAH CAN BE RICH & INDEPENDENT

    YES SAPP (& also STAR) is asking the right questions.

    This goes to the core of the issue- which is since Sabah is so rich why on earth are we still staying put in Malaysia?

    As it is Sabah is just a $Billion bank for UMNO to draw seemingly endless volumes of money to develop Malaya and enrich UMNO secret accounts!?

    Clearly Malaya need Sabah more for its wealth than we ever need Malaya!

    The question that is staring us in our eyes is: Why don't we take Sabah out of Malaysia for real independence?

      SARAWAK is dominated by Malayan parties DAP PKR PAS in case you missed that!

      The Sarawak PBB BN is a proxy of UMNO. This is no more than a traitor party which betrayed Sarawak over and over again and sold out the people to UMNO.

      This started with CM Rahman Yakuubn & his equally evil nephew Taib signing away Sarawak oil rights like Harris Salleh about the same time. Both these betrayal coincided with the passing of the Petroleum Development Act 1974 to seize control of our oil.

      Sabah is better off with strong Sabah Parties to stop UMNO bullying & stealing from us!

    Also unlike the other outsider parties lead by Sabahan pretending to lead Sabahan to exit from this repression but they are actually the shadow of BN.

  32. When Yong Teck Lee says that SAPP is fighting for native rights, he is simply lying. When he was the chief minister [1996–1998], lands allocated to natives were actually ‘stolen’ and given to public-listed companies.

    A good example is the Tongod Region where not less than 20,000 acres of land earlier set aside for native socio-economic projects, under the ‘Tongod Regional Planning Study’, mooted during the Berjaya era, were given away to a public-listed company. This is blatant Daylight Robbery!!
    As a consequence, the impoverished and largely hardcore poor of Tongod lost their birthright (ancestral lands) and became ‘refugees’ on their own land, setting up ‘sulaps’ along the road bordering their stolen land, eating dust induced by passing vehicles, everyday. To add insult to injury, the mega companies that now occupy the ‘stolen’ lands, evicted them and bulldozed even their dilapidated dwellings.

    Now SAPP goes around trying to champion the rights and native customary lands. This is World-Class Hypocrisy!!

  33. During the tenure of Yong Teck Lee in as little as 2 years, he approved some 265 logging licences covering over 300,000 ha (an area 5 times larger than the island of Singapore). These licences were given to cronies, associates, non-Sabahans included, and is clearly an act of gross irresponsibility at the expense of environmental conservation, sustainability and public interest.

    The delegation of authority to approve logging areas given by Cabinet to Datuk Yong Teck Lee as CM, was well and truly taken advantage of and abused by Yong to reward his friends, cronies and supporters.

    Can you imagine what will happen if SAPP were to come back into power?
