Sabah ICs to protect Sabahans' rights and privileges

The issuance of identity cards exclusively for bona fide Sabahans is the only way to distinguish between them and non-Sabahans and to protect their rights and privileges.

Datuk Eric Majimbun, deputy president of opposition Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), said the party's proposal to issue the Sabah ICs is in accordance to the spirit of the 20-Point memorandum that sought to protect the rights of Sabahans within Malaysia.

"To say that issuing the ICs to Sabahans is impractical and comparing Sabah to Peninsular states like Kedah and Selangor not only ignores the need to arrest the gradual deterioration of Sabahans' rights due to the massive influx of outsiders into the state since independence in 1963, it also shows the apologist tendencies of Sabah BN leaders," he said in response to a statement by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussein.

The proposal to issue ICs to Sabahans is one of the main agenda in SAPP's campaign for GE13.

Datuk Yahya and some Malaya parties must stop questioning SAPP, a Sabah party's genuine intention to resolve the illegal immigrant issues. For instants, DAP has been twisting the facts on the issues of illegal immigrants to protect BN-UMNO illustrated the Malaya parties' mentality in undermining Sabah's interests and has no intention to resolve this serious problem burdening Sabah all these years.

Yahya, who is also Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries, said SAPP's proposal was impractical because doing so would mean that other states within the country will also need to have the same exercise.

"Yahya is wrong to compare Sabah with Kedah and Selangor because their route to independence and be a part of Malaysia is entirely different."

Majimbun, who is also Member of Parliament for Sepanggar, said Yahya's statement was an attempt to defend the continued presence of peninsular political forces in Sabah and to perpetuate the erosion of Sabahans' rights and privileges successfully negotiated by the founding fathers of the state but systematically stifled and adulterated through BN's political machinations and deceptions.

Reiterating SAPP's struggle to have Sabah-based political parties ruling the state, Majimbun said witnesses' testimonies in the on-going Royal Commission of Inquiry on the presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah has highlighted to urgent need for comprehensive and unprecedented actions to protect Sabahan rights.

"Our rights have been clearly eroded by sinister schemes to engineer changes in our demographics by indiscriminate granting of citizenship and artificially increasing the number of one category of voters over others.

"in our midst are tens or hundreds of thousands of dubious citizens who are sharing resources that ought to be enjoyed exclusively by Sabahans.

"it will be challenging to weed out the dubious citizens, but as an autonomous state government when we win the elections, we can immediately move to distinguish between Sabahans and others, and very tangibly return many of the privileges to our people, and put a stop to the approval of, for examples, trading licences, transport permits to undeserving people."
