Sabah poverty drop is false, says Jeffrey’s party

Calvin Kabaron
The STAR party describes the latest claim by BN as 'ridiculous' and demands proof.

INANAM: The State Reform Party (STAR) is crying “fake” about the recent announcement by the Sabah Barisan Nasional government that poverty in the reputedly poorest state in the country dropped to 8% last year from from 19.7% in 2009.

The party, which is led by Jeffrey Kitingan, the younger brother of Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin, also expressed incredulity at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) findings that the average Sabahan household now earns RM4,013 per month.

“This is a ridiculous announcement but we can expect it from this government,” said STAR Sabah deputy chairman Daniel John Jambun in a statement.

He was commenting on the announcement on the new figures made by Director-General of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Dr Rahamt Bivi Yussoff on Thursday.

“The announcement was made to hoodwink the people to believe BN’s own contention that they have delivered richness to the people in Sabah.

“In fact there are more poor people now as compared to four years ago,” alleged Jambun who is also chairman of a UK-based NGO, Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BoPiMaFo).

Jambun also accused the authorities of concocting findings and twisting facts in order to justify their persistent heaping of praises on BN leaders.

He said it should be remembered that Chief Minister Musa Aman announced a year ago that there was no more poverty in Tawau and that Tawau was the first district in Malaysia to attain such status.

“But who will believe a group of people who not only twist facts and figures but hide the truth from the people and worse still distort even the history of the country including the formation of Malaysia Federation back in 1963?

“I am already receiving complaints from voters across Sabah that the BN announcement that poverty in the state now stood only at 8%, and that each family now earna RM4,000 per month is just ‘bullshit’, to borrow their own words, misleading and misrepresenting the truth.

“The people refuse to believe such findings because they could feel and see for themselves what was going on in their kampungs. Poverty remains and in fact has worsened in many parts where BN leaders are helpless to provide anything,” Jambun said.

Publish the names

He also challenged the EPU and BN to publish the names of recipients of aid and list out these new families that now generate a group household earning of more than RM4,000 every month.

“If they fail to list out then they stand accused as liars and of hoodwinking (the people). What we fear is that these surveys were made in a certain month where members of the families were given RM500 or RM250 BR1M one-off cash aid and perhaps other aids,” he said.

Jambun also claimed that many households in Kadazandusun and Bajau kampungs earn less than RM2,000 per month and as much as up to 30% of the rural population are still living in dilapidated houses and more than half without clean water while more than 30% are without consistent electricity supply.

“Go to the kampungs in Tuaran, Kota Belud, Pitas, Ranau, Tongod, Kudat, Sandakan, Semporna, Banggi, Nabawan and Tenom and see for yourself how small houses have more than one family sharing a house.

“Malnutrition is everywhere, school dropouts high, public hygiene absent, social ills on the rise, no sense of security… our society is vulnerable to exploitation by those in power. This is the kind of society we are in in many places,” he said.

He said to test the believability of the ruling party, one needs to ask “why is it a crime to own a ‘bakakuk’ (homemade shotgun) to protect one’s ‘kebun’ (orchard) “but it was fine for a group of foreign bandits with modern rifles to threaten us and be supplied with food and water and even more”.

Jambun was referring the continuing standoff in Lahad Datu between Malaysian security forces and a large group of Filipino gunmen who have occupied a village within a Felda settlement.

    7. ANOTHER UMNO ELECTION GIMMICK TO HIDE FAILED MALAYSIA FORMATION PROMISES TO ERADICATE POVERTY!

UMNO has been patching up "as you go" for 55 years in Malaya and 50 years in the Sabah Sarawak colonies with showy "development projects".

We all know by now these projects have been a ponzi scheme which Malaysia is, to enable UMNO and cronies GET FILTHY RICH and not improve the people's miserable lives.

Tunku Abdul Rahman led the call to bring "security and prosperity" to the Borneo colonies as a ploy to trick the Borneo people into supporting his co-British Malaysia federation plan to take over Sabah and Sarawak.

"Eradication of poverty" was the buzz phrase which all school kids now grandparents can still remember from the 1960s

He also promised that Malaya would never make Sabah Sarawak Malayan colonies but treat them as "equal partners".

But even our most local naive Malaysia negotiators were awake enough not to trust the Malayans and insisted on the 18 and 20 Points Agreements to "safeguard" Borneo interest which Malaya solemnly signed with fingers crossed behind its back!

And after 50 years we awake to find that every single promise has been broken by the Malayans. They took us for a ride....! Sabah and Sarawak have been reduced to the status of colonies and the kindest way to put it is as "vassal states" run by puppet regimes who partake in the plunder.

How is it that after 55 years of "positive discrimination" in Malaya under their NEP Apartheid system the majority of Malayan Malays are still POOR?

Not to mention UMNO BN robbed Sabah and Sarawak oilfields to finance all these grand development projects like the Sabah Sarawak (aka Petronas Towers) new palaces,Putrid Jaya, highways, other infrastructures?

Sabah and Sarawak had the dubious honour of being ruled and plundered by UMNO and cronies and local traitors for 50 years. Thousands of rural people were robbed of their land and not a few literally ended on the scrap heap trying to scavenge to survive.

Sabah and Sarawak were rated as the poorest and next poorest countries respectively in Malaysia only in 2010 by the World Bank.

So any one can tell us how UMNO can magically reduced the poverty level so quickly?

Did they not just use the cheap option by giving a few hundred dollar as to each poor citizen and claim that they are above the "poverty line? (copying Pakatan's eradication of poverty)

It was not hard as the "poverty line" is so low....

  6. lost confidence in Star leadership.

Public figure Patrick Sindu is quitting State Reform Party (Star) to join a Peninsular oppsosition party, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

He will do so at a PKR function at 2pm in Kampung Sungkadon, Papar tomorrow (Jan 5, 2013).

"There is a ceremony on the resignation of Star members in P175 Papar tomorrow, to be witnesed by PKR President, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail," said one of his text messages intercepted by Borneo Herald today.
A check with Papar found out that locals there also had heard of Sindu impending departure from the Sarawak-based opposition party. This is a big slap to Star leader in Sabah Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and his team who had been accused of sloppy management of the party here, some of them have said.

Sindu, a former president of a now-defunct consumer body in Sabah, Cash, said he has lost confidence in Star leadership.

Insiders in the know however claimed that Sindu could be unsettled in Star because the party has not made any commitment to him in regards to candidacy for the coming general election.

  7. STAR has a few Muslim leaders within its fold but their influence is limited. Despite the drawback, the party is not giving up its bid to contest in mainly Muslim areas for a bigger share of power in the 60-seat state assembly.

But the party may also have other organisational and management problems. While its financial status is unknown, PKR and even fellow local opposition party, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) are deemed to be in a better position in this area.

STAR’s two separate wings – youth and women – on the other hand are said to lack cohesion.

SAPP may get a free ride from Pakatan Rakyat in three Chinese dominated state seats – Likas which was once held by SAPP president Yong Teck Lee, Api-Api where Yong’s nemesis PBS Yee Moh Chai is incumbent and Luyang, where the party’s incumbent Melanie Chia remains popular.

STAR, on the other hand, remains unsettled as the 13th general election gets closer. It is sending out conflicting signals and giving “false hope” according to some within the party.

    ReplyDelete
  8. STAR’s leaders pessimistic

An insider who declined to be named discussing party matters said that one such example of “false hope” is in KadazanDusun area, Kuala Penyu. STAR has little hope of wresting the seat from PKR’s John Ghani, the probable opposition candidate.

Such is Ghani’s popularity in the constituency that he is reportedly being pursued by Sabah Umno.

STAR’s search for credible leaders who can pose a challenge is bogged down. Of its four deputy state chairmen, only Nicholas Guntobon, a young medical practitioner is certain to contest in Liawan, Keningau.

Another, Paul Voon is said to be hesitant, while outspoken Daniel John Jambun is said to be struggling to get his party’s endorsement for contesting in Inanam which is also being eyed by SAPP’s Sepanggar MP Eric Majimbun.

Jambun could also be good for the Sepanggar parliamentary seat but since Kitingan has agreed to the status quo with SAPP, his deputy chairman is in a fix. He may still go up against the SAPP candidate in Inanam but this would split the opposition vote.

Another deputy, Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari from Petagas, is said to be reluctant to stand in his own area as it has over 4,000 postal votes from the army base in Kem Lok Kawi.

Awang was initially said to be keen to be fielded in Sekong, Sandakan but later switched to nearby Kimanis parliamentary seat where the Kadazandusun population is fairly substantial.

However he may end up having to now wait and see what happens in the Muslim-Chinese state seat of Tanjong Aru adjacent to Petagas. But even here its a toss up as SAPP secretary-general Richard Yong is also said to be the favoured opposition candidate.

Leaders of STAR who recently returned from the party’s recent SWOT analysis meeting in Tambunan are pessimistic about the party’s direction.

They said that despite strong grassroots support, there are many issues the party has not addressed including on funds for advertising and media campaigns.

“We cannot be operating on free services. We need strategists. We must have our party organs. Even our website was only recently put up.

“STAR must wake up and harness the strength of support of Sabahans. We cannot be complacent. The problem is some are already over-confident of winning, but this could be a false hope as many are still fence-sitters,” said one leader who asked not to be identified.

In the end, it will be all up to the mercurial Kitingan, a Harvard University trained academic-turned-politician. What his colleagues in the party are worried about is that he may add credibility to saying that leaders only want to hear nice things about them.

SO STAR & SAPP WHY CAN'T YOU UNITE FOR SABAH & PEOPLE'S SAKE?

Some commentators have suggest splitting the seats equally and the balance could be contested by the 2 parties.

This can be a temporary arrangement and the 2 parties can fight each later after they have thrown out UMNO BN.

But for Sabah and the people's sake unite to fight the elections. Put aside your family differences to face the common enemy!

We must make a DEFINITE move to rid ourselves of 50 years of Malayan colonial domination. The younger generation already have started their Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia movement.

Melihat kepada tsunami politik di Semenanjung pada tahun 2008, pemimpin2 Sabah dan Sarawak telah mempergiat lagi aktiviti terutama dari segi pembangunan untuk rakyat.

If anything is making us poorer it's the government. Notice how things more expensive here than in the Peninsular. And they still tax us a lot! Also, they are taking 95% of our oil, so the government really shouldn't talk about trying to help Sabahans when they are the ones looting us!

  43. Saya bukan pembangkang. Teruskan merepek!
