DAP labelled Kadazans as illegal immigrants
PENAMPANG - A complainant from Taman Public near Kota Kinabalu is unhappy that her mother and sister were labelled as illegal immigrants by an article that appeared in a political news media recently.
Rosaria Michael, 42, said they are Kadazans from Penampang, and approached Likas assemblyman and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) deputy president Datuk Liew Teck Chan for help to clear the names of her mother, Bernadette Poya Sobinting, sister Margaret Michael, 49, and cousin Rosina Mudin, 51, who are tobacco vendors in Donggongon township.
Since the vendors are from Donggongon, Penampang, Liew brought them to SAPP Moyog office where SAPP Moyog CLC chairman Aloysius D Siap organized a meeting with them.
During the meeting on March 18, the spokesperson for the group, Margaret, said after reading the news from Ubah Sabah last month entitled "Cahaya Baru Untuk Siapa?" that appeared in DAP's January 2013 issue, she said she could not sleep as she, her mother and cousin had been labelled as illegal immigrants.
Their photos, taken in Donggongon and captioned as PATI, appeared in the publication.
"We came to complain as we are strongly against being labelled as illegal immigrants and we chose SAPP to clear our names.
"Why are we being labelled as illegal immigrants when we are Kadazans, born and bred in Kampung Tulung Inobong and Kampung Tanaki, Penampang?
"We are very disappointed with DAP state secretary and Moyog divisional head Dr Edwin Bosi for not refuting the statement from their publication. He, being a Kadazan, should have put things right and defended us but he did not. My friends are making fun of us, which is embarrassing.
"This is the problem with peninsula-based parties like DAP which does not know the difference between the locals and the illegal immigrants. They are labelling us KDMs as illegal immigrants and to us this is against our culture and tantamount to harassing us," she said.
According to Margaret, her mother has been operating her tobacco business in Donggongon for the past 20 years.
"I myself have been selling tobacco in Donggongon for the past six years," she said, adding that a police report would be made on the matter.
Present at the meeting were Liew, Aloysius, SAPP information chief Chong Pit Fah, SAPP Moyog Women chief Martina Libasa, SAPP Moyog secretary Francis Mojikon, Wilfred Gaban, Danny Tan and David KS Ng.
Margaret and Rosina then proceeded to the Penampang police station to make a police report.

Yet foreigners can get IC so easily...this is Sabah under BN.
ReplyDeleteAlso, could this be because they are not Muslim? For Sabah's sake I hope not...
Deleteisu kerakyatan sering dipertikaikan.
DeleteDemocratic Action Party, or better known as DAP was established in the 1960’s by Mr. Devan Nair. DAP declared to be irrevocably committed to the ideal of a free, democratic and socialist Malaysia, based on the principles of racial and religious equality, social and economic justice, and founded on the institution of parliamentary democracy.
ReplyDeleteIs DAP really upholding their principles of multi-ethnicity? Since Devan Nair, the only other Indian who rose to prominence in DAP is Karpal Singh. Since its establishment, no other Indian has held a top post in the party. If that is astounding, it is even more shocking that there has never been a Malay leader holding any top position in DAP. The nation’s most populated ethnic group has little or no say in DAP.
ReplyDeleteTime and time again DAP has been accused of practising race-based politics. Despite the leaders of DAP claiming false to the allegations, results of the last DAP elections speak for itself. None of the Malay candidates who contested for a Central Executive Committee (CEC) position managed to get into the Top 20. Before a national uproar could occur, as an eye wash two Malay candidates were appointed to the CEC. Only time will reveal how much they can contribute with their representation. The number of Indian candidates also is kept to a bare minimum.
ReplyDeleteBeing a party that claims to be multi-racial the representation of non-Chinese ethnic group is a worrying sign. Till today we still see some members of DAP at war with its coalesced party PAS over the hudud issue. What if DAP-PKR-PAS does someday form the government? Are we, a small nation like Malaysia heading towards separation of states?
ReplyDeleteThe biggest opposition party with the most amount of representation in parliament after Barisan Nasional seems to lack genuine multi-ethnic representation at the elected leadership level. DAP is definitely not practising multi-ethnicity as preached by their leaders. DAP will not represent and will not reflect the diverse cultures and beliefs which constitutes the people of Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a long time before the DAP becomes fully multi ethnic. You cannot find anything overtly racist in the DAP's constitution or in their stated objectives as a political party but they have not yet escaped the stigma of being overly Chinese-centric. That is why people see them as racist. For the record the DAP does have non-Chinese but as the writer says they are very few in number.
ReplyDeleteOther than the BN, there is no real multi ethnicity in party politics in Malaysia (except maybe for the PPP - Kayveas punya party and some of the parties in Sabah and Sarawak but you can argue that point as well). By the same measure (which we used for the DAP) all the political parties in Malaysia are "mono-ethnic" to an extent.
ReplyDeleteThe political reality is a Malay / Muslim must provide leadership to any multi-ethnic political party in Malaysia. This is NOT by Law or by the Constitution but just a reflection of the reality on the ground. And he or she must be genuinely committed to multi ethnicism. So far this formula has worked quite ok. It is not ok but it still works.
ReplyDeleteThis reality will only change if a non Malay / non Muslim leader emerges who can win the trust of the majority Malays. Just figurehead Malays / Muslims playing the Ali Baba leadership role will lead to trouble. This was the situation in the country prior to 1970.
DeleteThe Barisan Nasional (BN) government cares for the total needs of the people, not just physical infrastructure but also mental and financial needs, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
ReplyDelete
DeleteHe said that the distribution of the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) and 1Malaysia netbooks were clear proof of this development strategy.
“Only the BN government can conceive and implement such creative assistance programmes for the people. Unlike the Opposition, who are only good in talking and misleading the people,” he said when distributing iDola netbooks to the public in Kota Marudu district and Matunggong sub-district.
Delete
DeleteOngkili distributed 941 netbooks to 352 university students and the rest to NGOs, village heads, village committees, religious bodies and parent-teacher associations in the Kota Marudu district.
DeleteFor Matunggong, he distributed 1,010 netbooks to the same target groups. This put the total number of netbooks already distributed under the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s 1Malaysia Netbook Distribution Programme in Kota Marudu parliamentary constituency to more than 4,500 units.
DeleteOngkili, who is also Member of Parliment for Kota Marudu, said Kota Marudu had been fortunate to have among the highest number of recipients of the netbooks in the state, as part of the national broadband initiative aimed at increasing internet access for target groups, students and the poor.
The effort had also proved fruitful as the MCMC had found that the district now had the highest broadband penetration for rural districts in Sabah, with a 30 per cent increase, since the distribution of the netbooks began in October last year, he added.
DeleteOngkili also told the people that as the units were limited, they had to fulfil set requirements to receive the aid.
Delete“As 15,000 families in Kota Marudu would fulfil the requirement of having household income of RM3,000 and below, we have to be selective in giving out the netbooks.
Delete“As such we target NGOs, students and families with university-going children and cannot give it to every individual. For example, one unit of netbook is given to a family with a child or children studying in university,” he said.
ReplyDeleteThe old guard at Pakatan Rakyat has been quiet for some time, but with the coalition's election manifesto receiving flak for being unviable and socialist, DAP's Lim Kit Siang has now offered some more proposals which he probably hopes will energise a tired DAP.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Kit Siang should be reminded of the DAP's refusal to be a part of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) that reviewed the Lynas project last March. It's easy for Kit Siang to now talk about parliamentary committees, but where was he when his own party MPs were boycotting such a committee?
ReplyDeleteIf Kit Siang was so interested in democracy, he should start by promoting internal democracy within his party itself. He should, for instance, call an immediate re-election of the DAP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) whose 'flawed' election in January was a complete fiasco.
