Riduan to undergo trial on July 1-4 for rape

KOTA KINABALU - The Sessions Court here today extended the bail of the restaurant manager accused of raping and later marrying his under-aged victim.

Judge Ummu Khatom Abd Samad said the bail was extended until the disposal of the case.

Senior Federal Counsel Jamil Ariffin said the accused was released on an RM8,000 bail which expired today.

Ummu Khatom said trial for the case would proceed on July 1-4 and fixed June 20 for case management.

Riduan Masmud, 40, (with glasses) was charged on Feb 28 with raping the girl, who was 12 years and six months old, inside a car parked by the roadside in Inanam near here at 10am on Feb 18.

On May 21, the court was told that Riduan had married the girl.

Lawyer Datuk Mariati Robert held a watching brief for the Sabah Law Association.

On Monday, Riduan was charged in court for bribing the victim’s father to withdraw the police report against him.

Riduan pleaded not guilty to the three charges he faced.

On the first charge, he is accused of having offered RM5,000 to the father of the girl outside the guardhouse of Institut Sinaran at the Jalan Tuaran Bypass near here between 9 pm and 10 pm on April 18.

On the second charge, Riduan is accused of having given RM2,000 to the girl’s father at the same place and time on that date.

On the third charge, he is accused of having given RM3,000 to the same person at the Naga Emas canteen in Jalan Tuaran Lama near here between 11 pm and midnight on the same day.

Riduan was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of up to five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
