Man who made killing in betting game bludgeoned to death

SIBU - An illegal game of Holo ended in the ‘banker’ (card distributor) being killed early Sunday morning after a player accused him of cheating.

Hasreh Ismail was attacked with a knife outside his hostel block. The player, who had lost heavily in the gambling, allegedly stabbed him in the back of his neck before slitting his throat.

Both the player and the ‘banker’ were construction workers in a nearly completed council building project. They had been gambling and drinking outside their hostel on Saturday at 9pm.

The happy hours stretched till 1am when the gambling ended in a quarrel when the player accused Hasreh of cheating.

Hasreh’s body was dumped into a six-foot deep drain through a manhole after the alleged murder.

The police were only told of the crime on Sunday at about 9pm.

They rushed over to comb the crime scene for evidence and took in the other three gamblers to help in the probe.

Firemen fished Hasreh’s body out from the manhole and police sent it to Sibu Hospital mortuary.

Hasreh hailed from Indonesia and was holding a Malaysian identity card after he married a woman in Sandakan. He had his address in Kampung Sim Sim,Sandakan where his wife lives.

The suspect is said to be a man from Pakan. The police have launched a manhunt for him.

Deputy police chief Superintendent Zayadi Sebeli confirmed the murder.
