Mufti bashing/ Bungsu told to report to Native Court

KOTA KINABALU: State Mufti Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar has been urged to report himself to the Native Court in Penampang.

Making the call was Samson Quintin, President of Persatuan Kebudayaan dan Kebajikan Anak Negeri (PANAS), who said this is to facilitate the district Native Court’s investigation into his allegation that “the Kadazan is an ‘invented’ race”can be carried out.

Samson further said Bungsu’s claim of the Kadazans is a humiliation and an insult to the community.

“We feel humiliated and insulted, what more to know that he made this humiliating statement in front of thousands of participants of a symposium,” he said.

He said this in a response in support of the Kadazan Society Sabah’s (KSS) move of filing a summon for Bungsu appear in front of the Native Court to explain his statement.

“Humiliating another native is just like humiliating the other natives in Sabah because they are blood brothers and sisters. We are united in this particular issue and we fully support KSS.

“The Mufti has to respond positively and report himself to the Native Court in Penampang. We also hope that this will not happen again,” Samson said adding that the most appropriate action to be taken in cases like this is to ‘sogit’ (fine) the offender.

On Monday, led by its deputy president Sylvester Disimond, KSS filed a summons against State Mufti Bungsu @ Aziz Jafaar for insulting and humiliating the Kadazan community.

The ‘saman malu’ (customary summon) was filed at the Penampang District Chief’s office of OKK Christopher Mojungkim.

Disimon claimed that Bungsu’s remark has caused anger among the Kadazan community and that it has to be properly and adequately dealt with, so as to appease the community and to act as a deterrent to others not to insult one’s race.

“Our feelings and dignity have been hurt beyond repair, and the matter must be settled through native court,” he said.

Mojungkim said Bungsu is obliged to appear at the Penampang Native Court within 21 days.

“If he fails to do so, we will work with the police to issue a warrant (of arrest) on him,” he said. This is within the ambit of native laws.

Disimon said Bungsu must make an appeasement to the Kadazan community in accordance with the native customary law.

He pointed out that the term ‘Kadazan’ has existed since time immemorial and it was never invented and is not of recent origin as claimed by Bungsu.

Bungsu had on Sept 28, said the Kadazan was an invented ethnic group made of non-Muslim Dusun people, who are mostly Catholics.

He, however, has yet to make an apology or reply to the anger levelled against him from the various parties such as Upko, PBS, PBRS, NGOs as well as individuals.

Bungsu, who is of Brunei-Suluk ancestry, has not bothered to answer the calls for him to explain his sensitive remarks against the Kadazan.

Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman has since stated that the views expressed by the mufti was his alone and had nothing to do with the State as such.

The mufti’s comment has raised the ire of various ethnic groups in Sabah.

  10. I don't have the details intact but there is a Kadazan-English/English-Kadazan Dictionary printed/published in 1958.

To whom it may concern, look into this. It was compiled by an Australian. Did it originate from the U.S. Government Printing Office? The language of the Kadazan must have been deemed fit to summon their attention to warrant the publication of
the bilingual dictionary. It was compiled even before The Japanese Occupation. Only it was printed much later.

School children in Sabah used to be taught and there was a book on The History of Sabah.

    Where did all that go?

  18. Ketua Menteri Sabah Datuk Musa Aman terpaksa membuat kenyataan berhubungan dengan kenyataan MUFTI Sabah berkaitan dengan "memelayukan" rakyat Sabah yang beragama islam.

    ReplyDelete
