NRD officer involved in forging IC under police probe

KUALA LUMPUR - The National Registration Department (NRD) is prepared to cooperate with police with regard to the alleged involvement of an NRD officer in the forging of identity cards in Miri, Sarawak.

Its director-general Datuk Jariah Mohd Said said the NRD would not compromise with anyone found to have breached the law in the issuing of identity cards.

"Follow-up action based on the existing law and regulations will be taken by the NRD," she said in a media statement issued today.

Meanwhile, NRD public relations officer Jainisah Mohd Noor said forging of the MyKad is a criminal offence and individuals involved could be arrested and jailed and/or fined.

"Under Act 78 and the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), those found guilty of the offence could be fined not exceeding RM20,000 or jailed for three years or both, upon conviction," she said when contacted by Bernama.

According to newspaper reports today, an NRD staff in his late 50's and a married couple were arrested by police at a rented house in Pujut 2, Miri for suspected involvement in forging the MyKad.

Also arrested were 13 Philippine nationals including six women for having suspected false identity cards. – Bernama
