State Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Omar Mammah, yesterday strongly disclaimed the published photo as the police are still carrying out investigation to identify the actual suspects.
“It is not them (suspects in the shooting). The photograph of the two suspects (as appeared in Facebook) detained by police were actually involved in a recent theft case in the state capital. I therefore urge the public not to be misled into believing what is being said or published in any social media,” he told reporters, when met after inspecting several affected premises in the drive-by shooting incident which took place on Friday night and Saturday morning in the state capital.
Also present at the scene were city police chief, ACP Jauteh Dikun, deputy CID chief, Superintendent Suhaimi Hj Wiro, and city CID chief DSP Nor Azizulkifli Mansor.
When asked on the close circuit television’s (CCTV) footage showing several men walking into a building with guns that were also circulating in the social media, if they were the wanted suspects, Omar said, the police are still examining the footage but believe they may not be the individuals that are being wanted by the police in the drive-by shooting.
“As I have said, the police are still investigating this case and so far no arrests have been made. We are still collecting evidence, including footages from CCTVs installed at several premises,” he said.
Earlier, police claimed that a group of irresponsible individuals, believed to be teenagers, had cause unnecessary panic when they went around the state capital shooting at 31 premises with what is believed to be air guns loaded with marbles early Saturday morning.
The group was said to have moved around the state capital in three vehicles shooting at premises along their way with air guns loaded with marbles, in the city centre, Inanam, Luyang and Penampang between 11.45 pm on January 10 until 6 am on January 11.
Among the premises affected were banks, hotels, beauty saloons, restaurants, offices, a petrol station and shopping malls with losses estimated to amount to around hundreds and thousands of ringgit.
No known casualty was however reported in the incident, which reportedly brought about some degree of panic and apprehension in the social media, Facebook and WhatsApp.
