KENINGAU - Panic buying of fuel by local residents caused the roads near the town area here to be jammed with vehicles.
A check on the situation showed long lines of vehicles queuing up at all the petrol kiosks in the district.
It was learnt that the panic buying was triggered by rumours of fuel shortage due to the landslides that occurred along the Keningau-Kimanis and Tambunan-Kota Kinabalu roads.
As at Thursday afternoon, only one Petronas fuel station remained open, while the others were closed after having run out of fuel supply.
Keningau Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chief Geofrey Gumalang, when contacted, said the supply of fuel in Keningau was supposedly enough for the motoring public until today (Friday).
"However, due to the unforeseen events that took place, many consumers made their own assumptions and panic buying happened, leading to a shortage in the supply of fuel," he said.
According to Geoffrey, the next fuel supply for Tenom, Tambunan and Keningau will arrive later Thursday evening through the Sipitang-Tenom-Keningau route, so the public should have no reason to worry about the matter.
