MCMC warns of legal action against those responsible for spreading Ebola rumours

PETALING JAYA - Legal action can be taken against those spreading rumours on Ebola through the Internet, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) warns.

Its senior director Sheikh Raffie Abd Rahman said in a statement yesterday that people should check with the relevant agencies to verify news from the social media before spreading it to their friends.

On Thursday, a website, which appears to be a news aggregator, claimed that 14 people in Ipoh had been “confirmed” as having Ebola and the hospital was shut down.

It also repeated several stories that did not cite any sources, claiming different figures for Ebola cases in Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya.

However, the statement did not say whether the MCMC would take down the website or the action that it would take against those responsible.

Health Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that there was no Ebola case in Malaysia thus far.

“We take this irresponsible act seriously.

“We will collaborate with other enforcement authorities to investigate the source of the rumours and ensure the necessary action is taken against them,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said the rumours had caused panic among the people, who had also questioned the integrity of the monitoring undertaken by the ministry and related agencies.

He said the ministry would continue to monitor the situation and new developments from the World Health Organisation.

Those seeking the latest information on the disease can visit the ministry’s website at www.moh.gov.my.

  1. It is seditious to create fear and panic amongst the population like what UMNO BN is already doing more effectively.
