PENAMPANG - An elderly couple on a motorcycle was killed in an accident involving a trailer lorry, a Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle and another motorcycle at the Sigah Roundabout in Donggongon, here, Wednesday.
The couple's daughter, identified only as Maria in her 40s, claimed seeing photos of the accident circulated via WhatsApp but did not suspect it was her parents.
Maria, the eldest of 10 siblings, said she only knew that the fatal accident involved her parents when she received a call from the police in the afternoon.
"My father was a former employee of the Land and Survey Department and since his retirement, he and mother have spent time caring for the grandchildren," she said, adding that her parents would go everywhere together on the motorcycle.
It was learnt that the accident occurred at about 11.45am.
Newly-appointed District Acting Police Chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak identified the couple as 69-year-old Bunsilak Sinto @ Anastasius and his 65-year-old wife, Tilis @ Bibiana binti Jikoni, from Kg Duvanson in Putatan.
The other motorcyclist, a 33-year-old Malay addressed at Taman Putrajaya Telipok, sustained serious injuries and was sent to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the 54-year-old trailer driver claimed he was transporting a steamroller from Putatan to Kasigui when his lorry was rear-ended by a vehicle.
"I alighted from the lorry to inspect the damages only to see a body under the lorry and two motorcycles on the roadside," he said.
The Mitsubishi driver, in his 80s, admitted to rear-ending the lorry but denied having any knowledge about how the motorcycles got involved in the accident.
He claimed that he and his wife went to Donggongon town to buy sundry at the market and were returning to Putatan when the accident happened.
