Man lodges report over daughter's conversion at school

KOTA KINABALU - A police report has been lodged by a man who claimed that his 16-year-old daughter had converted to Islam without his knowledge at a school in Kinarut, Papar recently.

Angkatan Gabungan Rakyat Asli Sabah (Agaras) President Michael Frederick on Friday said he met with the 46-year-old Dusun man who expressed his dissatisfaction over the matter.

"I was made to understand that the students were gathered by the school warden who asked them to say the 'Kalimah Syahadah' which declared them as Muslims.

"He also told me that a relative saw his daughter wearing a head scarf, prompting him to lodge a police report in Papar because he wanted to know why he was not informed prior to her conversion," he said.

"We urge the police as well as the State Education Department to investigate the matter and we also want to know the reason for the students to be converted to Islam.

"We find it surprising how underage Christian students can be converted without consent from the parents or guardian," he said.

"We are not against those who wish to convert, but let it be according to the law," he added.

Based on the report lodged at about 3.06pm on Feb 4 at the Kinarut Police Station, the man discovered that his daughter had converted without his knowledge.

The man, a rubber tapper, claimed that he had not met his daughter for some time because she stayed in the school hostel.

He lodged the report because he wanted the school and the Religious Department to explain why he was not informed prior to her conversion.
